Camera Machine Learning Engineer

Work on camera hardware powered by machine learning with Apple’s Camera Hardware Engineering team in Cupertino, CA (onsite). This role combines end-to-end engineering across research, design, development, test, and qualification to help improve Apple camera products. You’ll prototype and evaluate ML algorithms for camera tasks such as image and video processing, computational photography, and scene understanding, while partnering on data collection and model validation.

What you’ll do

• Own research, design, development, test, and qualification of camera hardware for Apple products.
• Drive ongoing design evaluation, benchmarking, and characterization of Apple camera products.
• Research, design, and implement machine learning algorithms for camera tasks including image and video processing, computational photography, and scene understanding.
• Collaborate with data collection teams to curate large-scale image and video datasets, then analyze and preprocess data to support effective model training and validation.
• Build ML algorithm prototypes, evaluate performance through rigorous testing, and incorporate user feedback.
• Use your insights to support continuous improvement.

Required qualifications

• MS or Ph.D. in Machine Learning, EE, CS, Physics, Optics, or equivalent, plus 3+ years of machine learning research or relevant industry experience.
• Experience applying deep learning to computer vision tasks such as object recognition, image segmentation, inpainting, and anomaly detection.
• Experience using generative AI and reinforcement learning techniques to enhance hardware design processes.
• Experience with advanced ML methods to optimize system architectures and improve image quality in the hardware design domain.
• Experience with image quality metrics and evaluation methodology.
• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum 3 years experience in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related field.
• Strong Python skills and experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Knowledge of machine learning and computer vision principles, and algorithms.
• Experience with camera and/or image sensor technologies.

Pay & benefits

Base pay range: $150,400 to $225,300 per year. Base pay depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
