AI Engineer 4 (MLX, Agentic AI, Gen AI platform Services)

As an AI Engineer 4 (onsite in McLean, VA), you will work on end-to-end AI systems spanning foundation model training, LLM inference, and agentic AI workflows, including multi-agent systems. You’ll also contribute to similarity search, guardrails, and evaluation and observability at scale, with a focus on ethical alignment and reliability.

What you’ll do

• Collaborate with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that improve how associates work and how customers interact with Capital One.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components across the stack, including foundation model training, large language model inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
• Use an AI technology stack that can include AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, PyTorch, and additional open source and SaaS tools.
• Drive foundation model optimization techniques to improve production performance across scalability, cost, latency, and throughput.
• Contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.
• Own the end-to-end architecture for complex AI systems with attention to maintainability, observability, and ethical alignment.
• Define and maintain service-level objectives (SLOs) for AI reliability, including latency, uptime, and model performance drift.
• Partner with infrastructure engineering to optimize GPU/TPU utilization and accelerate model inference pipelines.
• Lead cross-functional technical reviews for new AI system deployments, ensuring security, data governance, and compliance expectations are met.
• Mentor Principal and Senior Associates on scalable design, performance tuning, and research-to-production translation.

Skills and experience we’re looking for

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, plus either 4+ years of AI/ML algorithm or technology development (with a Bachelor’s) or 2+ years (with a Master’s).
• 4+ years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Salary and incentives

McLean, VA salary: $197,300 - $225,100 per year for AI Engineer 4.

This role may also be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI).
