Job Description

FedEx Dataworks is hiring an AI Engineer I for a hybrid role in the Orlando, FL area, with work requirements at the FedEx campus several times per week. In this position, you will design and deliver production-quality AI and ML solutions that support intelligent automation, predictive insights, and advanced analytics across the enterprise.

What you’ll do

You will own the end-to-end workflow for machine learning systems, from scalable training pipelines through deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement. The work focuses on operational readiness for AI services, including observability, defined service levels, and clear incident and rollback strategies. You will also collaborate with Data Scientists and MLOps Engineers to move prototypes into robust production implementations and integrate AI capabilities into enterprise workflows and digital platforms.

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable ML pipelines for training, validation, inference, and deployment.
  • Collaborate with MLOps Engineers to package and deploy models into enterprise systems using established MLOps practices.
  • Monitor deployed models for performance, data drift, and reliability; troubleshoot and resolve production issues.
  • Define and implement Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for key AI service metrics such as p50/p95 latency and availability, and establish monitoring and alerting for drift, latency, and error rates.
  • Write clean, efficient, well-documented code for AI and ML models supporting business use cases.
  • Implement data engineering and preprocessing workflows required for model inputs.
  • Continuously optimize AI application performance and scalability.
  • Partner with Data Scientists to transition experimental models and research prototypes into production-ready systems.
  • Support the integration of AI models into enterprise workflows, applications, and digital platforms.
  • Contribute to documentation and model output explainability for business stakeholders.
  • Ensure deployed AI systems align with enterprise governance, fairness, and security standards.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies, including LLMs and generative AI, to assess applicability to business problems.
  • Implement robust observability and define incident response and rollback strategies for AI services.

What you bring

  • 5+ years of experience and strong coding skills in Python, Java, or C++, including API development and software design.
  • Deep understanding of core ML concepts: classification, regression, clustering, and deep learning architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and frameworks like LangChain and LangGraph for RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems.
  • Data wrangling experience, including SQL, data warehousing, and ETL to prepare model inputs.
  • Proven ability to deliver the end-to-end model lifecycle from prototype to production.
  • Expertise in data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation for robust model performance.
  • Knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL databases for querying and managing data.
  • Software engineering best practices, including Git, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • Hands-on containerization with Docker and scalable deployment with Kubernetes.
  • MLOps observability experience, including model monitoring, drift tracking, and establishing model/version lineage, telemetry, and traceability.
  • Experience with advanced testing and deployment approaches such as canary/shadow deployments and unit, integration, adversarial, and regression testing.
  • Ability to integrate AI services into enterprise applications via RESTful APIs.
  • Proficiency with at least one cloud platform: GCP, AWS, or Azure, including related AI/ML services (e.g., Vertex AI, SageMaker, Azure ML).
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Apache Spark.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills in an Agile development environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with frontend JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue.js, or Angular for user-facing applications that consume AI models.
  • Skills that include IT security and infrastructure, plus experience with security and risk frameworks, standards, and best practices.

Location and compensation

  • Location: Orlando, FL (hybrid)
  • Work schedule: Candidates must live within 50 miles of the campus location and will work at the FedEx campus location several times per week.
  • Pay range: USD 7,488 - 10,444 per month (Orlando, FL stated range)

Education

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, information systems, and/or equivalent formal training.
