AI Engineer II - Enterprise Architecture
Job Description
American Express is seeking an AI Engineer II to help design and deliver production-ready, agentic AI systems that work with real financial data and support real customers. This is a hands-on role focused on writing production code, contributing to system design, and operating systems post-launch in a regulated environment.
Role Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of production agentic AI systems that operate on real financial data and serve real customers.
- Design, build, and ship AI-powered features while partnering with experienced engineers, product managers, and designers.
- Write production code and participate in system design discussions.
- Support and help operate what you build after launch, with assistance and guidance from more senior engineers.
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Hands-on experience building or contributing to AI-powered features, LLM-based applications, or applied ML systems through professional work or projects.
- Strong engineering fundamentals in at least one backend language: Python, Go, or TypeScript.
- Familiarity with APIs, basic cloud concepts, and modern development practices.
- Interest in agentic AI systems, autonomy, and AI-assisted development workflows.
- Willingness to learn, take feedback, and grow technical ownership over time.
- Comfort collaborating in cross-functional teams.
- Strong customer mindset and curiosity about real-world problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with LLM tooling, prompt engineering, RAG, or agent frameworks through work, coursework, or personal projects.
- Internship or early-career experience in fintech or other regulated environments.

Location and Compensation
Phoenix, AZ (onsite). Salary range: USD 89,250 - 150,250 per year.
