Applied AI Engineer
Job Description
Amcor is seeking an Applied AI Engineer to advance practical, responsible AI across its global Flexibles R&D organization. This onsite role in Neenah, WI will focus on turning enterprise R&D knowledge into decision support, predictive capabilities, and intelligent automation that improve engineering productivity and the speed and consistency of technical outcomes.
In this position, you will help shape Amcor’s R&D AI strategy by developing scalable AI systems that connect structured and unstructured information, evaluate emerging approaches like retrieval and generative AI, and support responsible deployment across R&D and Operations workflows.
What you will do
- Develop and deploy AI-enabled knowledge systems that connect structured and unstructured enterprise data and R&D content so technical information becomes accessible and actionable
- Build AI-assisted decision-support capabilities, including material and construction selection and product design validation, to improve decision speed, quality, and consistency
- Address business problems using predictive modeling, intelligent automation, knowledge systems, and generative AI, choosing techniques based on value, practicality, and scalability
- Set up testing, monitoring, and evaluation practices to keep AI systems reliable, transparent, and aligned with responsible AI principles
- Evaluate emerging technologies such as retrieval, generative AI, and applied machine learning, then translate them into practical R&D applications
- Create and maintain data structures, semantic layers, metadata, and retrieval mechanisms that help AI systems interpret, connect, and use R&D information
- Act as a subject-matter expert for R&D systems by encoding domain knowledge (schema semantics, data relationships, units) into AI infrastructure including model providers, data stores, and orchestration and evaluation frameworks
- Identify and close data gaps that block AI capabilities, partnering with data engineering and IT on ingest and pipeline work
- Define information architecture, knowledge-management standards, and governance approaches that keep R&D knowledge machine-interpretable, reusable, and scalable across AI applications
- Assess security exposure and cost before extending model access to new R&D systems and data, and work through how each capability fits into global R&D processes ahead of broader rollout
- Partner with business and other R&D functions to make advanced models, recommendations, and insights more accessible, explainable, and actionable for end users
- Collaborate with R&D engineers to understand how design decisions are made and build workflows that match real practice
- Drive adoption through stakeholder engagement, change management, and measurement of business impact and sustained usage
- Coordinate with IT, Information Security, and Legal on responsible AI deployment, confidential data protection, data residency, and acceptable use, translating technical concepts for multiple audiences
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical discipline; an advanced degree is advantageous
- 3+ years of industry experience in software engineering, data science, machine learning engineering, or applied AI, including production systems
- Demonstrated experience building applied AI solutions, including large language model applications, machine learning systems, intelligent automation, or knowledge-discovery tools with measurable business value and adoption
- Practical familiarity with modern AI application building blocks: retrieval and embeddings, prompt and context design, structured output, tool use, and evaluation (depth in several areas; emphasis on applying commercially available technologies rather than developing foundation models)
- Sound judgment about model limitations such as hallucination, retrieval failure, and evaluation, including experience designing systems that fail safely and visibly
- Understanding of polymer science, film extrusion, or food-packaging interactions preferred; interest in learning the domain is essential
- High proficiency in Python and SQL, including data pipelines and converting unstructured technical content into machine-usable form (Azure experience preferred)
- Proven delivery of cross-functional projects with measurable business impact
- Ability to travel occasionally (less than 10%)
Technologies
- Python, SQL, Azure
- Retrieval, embeddings, prompt and context design, structured output, tool use, evaluation
- Generative AI, large language model applications
