Job Description

Heritage Vet Partners and their Partner Clinics are building a reporting foundation that makes warehouse data reliable, consistent, and ready for dashboards and applications. In this onsite role based in Overland Park, KS or Omaha, NE, you will take ownership of the SQL-focused middle layer that transforms raw data into governed, reusable reporting products.

As the Data Analytics Engineer, you will design and maintain the views, semantic model structures, and SQL business logic that define metrics once and support teams and stakeholders across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain the reporting view layer in a SQL Server / Azure SQL data warehouse, including governed and documented views that act as the contract between raw data and downstream consumers.
  • Translate business definitions into durable T-SQL logic so metrics are defined once in a single place and reused consistently.
  • Own the structure of Analysis Services / Power BI semantic models, including tables, relationships, and core measures, so report builders work from a clean and performant model.
  • Create validation checks and reconciliation queries to catch issues early, investigate discrepancies, identify root cause, and apply fixes at the correct layer.
  • Write efficient T-SQL and tune views and queries that power reporting workloads, including deciding when a view should become an indexed view, a materialized table, or be redesigned.
  • Maintain clear documentation for reporting schema, metric definitions, and data lineage to reduce reliance on tribal knowledge.
  • Use AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, and Claude to accelerate T-SQL development, documentation, and code review, while retaining accountability for correctness of production changes.
  • Partner with data engineering on upstream schema changes, BI developers on semantic model needs, and business stakeholders to convert ambiguous requests into concrete, correct data definitions.

Requirements

  • 3+ years working hands-on with SQL Server or Azure SQL in an analytics, data warehousing, or reporting context.
  • Expert-level T-SQL, including complex joins, window functions, CTEs, and the judgment to confirm when a query is correct versus merely returning rows.
  • Hands-on experience with dimensional modeling and reporting-layer design, including star schemas, conformed dimensions, and slowly changing logic, plus opinions about when to adjust modeling guidance.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack: Analysis Services (tabular), Power BI semantic models, and enough DAX to support model design for measure writers.
  • Comfort using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to draft, review, and debug complex SQL with a validation-first mindset before production deployment.
  • Proven ability to turn vague business questions into precise data definitions and to defend data quality even when it would be easier to publish an imperfect number.
  • Strong written communication, with documentation, view comments, and metric definitions understandable to engineers and executives.

Technologies

  • SQL Server, Azure SQL, T-SQL
  • Analysis Services, Power BI, Power BI semantic models, DAX
  • GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, AI coding assistants

  • Primarily in-office, with flexibility for remote work if needed

Nice to Have

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical, or other regulated data environments
  • Exposure to version-controlled model development (TMDL, Tabular Editor, Git-based workflows)
  • Power Query / M experience, or experience supporting Excel-based analytical consumers
  • Familiarity with modern analytics engineering practices (dbt or similar), even with a SQL-native stack
  • Experience evaluating or adopting AI-assisted BI features (e.g., Power BI Copilot, natural language query tools) in a reporting environment
