Data Engineer, Radiology
Job Description
Join a research-focused team at The Brigham and Women’s Hospital working at the intersection of cancer imaging, open-source tooling, and large-scale analysis. This onsite role (Boston, MA) supports harmonizing imaging datasets into IDC-ready DICOM representations, modernizing 3D Slicer components, and developing advanced diagnostic MR image reconstruction software, including image generation and motion compensation.
Work setup & role basics: Regular employee, 40 hours per week, Day shift. Location: 75 Francis Street. Pay range: USD 75,275 - 109,553 per year.
Responsibilities
- Harmonize contributed cancer imaging datasets (radiology, digital pathology, annotations, and AI analysis results) into standard DICOM, preparing them for ingestion into IDC.
- Develop and maintain open source Python and C++ tools for accessing IDC data and converting between DICOM and research formats, including idc-index, highdicom, dcmqi, wsidicomizer, and related packages.
- Build and run cloud-based analysis workflows on Google Cloud using Terra and JetStream2 to apply open source AI analysis tools to large imaging cohorts and encode results as DICOM.
- Develop and maintain agentic interfaces to IDC, applying agentic approaches to support the project and its users.
- Modernize the 3D Slicer architecture by implementing modules against revised core libraries, reimplementing existing capabilities as reusable packages, and developing tests.
- Test and integrate components provided by collaborating institutions (including DICOM validator and annotation infrastructure), and report defects upstream.
- Prepare documentation, tutorials, example notebooks, and webinar materials; support users on the IDC forum.
- Track work in GitHub and participate in team meetings.
- Design, develop, and validate new software to meet project needs, including analyzing and helping fill computer hardware requirements.
- Optimize software performance to align with clinical objectives, and write diagnostic software to test and ensure accuracy and performance of solutions.
- Contribute detailed analyses and diagrams for manuscript preparation and grant submissions.
- Perform duties related to onboarding and maintaining workplace compliance/employability.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Computer Science highly preferred.
- Master’s degree in a related science or engineering field is highly preferred.
- Experience in advanced MR image reconstruction software developments is considered essential.
- Experience in advanced MR imaging reconstruction: > 2 years required.
- Experience in the medical field and patient care: > 1 year preferred.
- Proficient in Python, Matlab, C++, and AI frameworks such as PyTorch.
- Proficient in GPU and CPU multi-threaded programming.
- Comfortable with Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems.
- Good knowledge of MR reconstruction and analysis packages including BART, XD-GRASP, SigPy, and FreeSurfer.
- High attention to detail and strong communication skills, particularly for documentation.
