Job Description

Rula is building a new Trust and Safety function and needs a Data Scientist to be a central technical resource for protecting the platform. This role focuses on evaluating healthcare claims, analyzing billing signals, and turning data findings into analytics that legal and compliance partners can use to support regulatory standards.

This position is based in Los Angeles, CA with remote work options for candidates located in the United States. The salary range for the role is USD 166,000 - 192,850 per year, and the position requires 5+ years of relevant experience.

What you’ll do

  • Act as the core technical data expert responsible for protecting the platform, evaluating healthcare claims, and supporting operations aligned with regulatory expectations.
  • Review billing patterns, identify data anomalies, and produce clear analytics for legal and compliance partners.
  • Use advanced data querying skills along with a strong understanding of medical coding frameworks to work safely within large, complex datasets.
  • Build proactive models and protective guardrails intended to safeguard legal standing, protect patient care, and support secure business operations.
  • Report directly into the Sr. Analytics Manager of Business Intelligence.

What you bring

  • 5+ years of professional experience in analytics, data science, or forensic data investigation.
  • Expert-level SQL and Python/R proficiency for querying large datasets, building data logic, and identifying systemic anomalies.
  • Demonstrated expertise with data visualization tools such as Looker, Tableau, Hex, or Mode to create automated risk-monitoring pipelines and compliance dashboards.
  • Strong data storytelling, including a track record of translating complex technical findings into clear risk assessments for non-technical leadership and legal partners.
  • Experience with data integrity auditing, including investigating discrepancies, gaps, or historical anomalies across complex data infrastructure.

SQL, Python, R, Looker, Tableau, Hex, Mode, CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS.

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior experience working directly in healthcare compliance, legal operations, or Trust & Safety (for example, auditing for fraud, waste, and abuse).
  • Strong familiarity with medical coding frameworks (such as CPT, ICD-10, or HCPCS) and health insurance reimbursement pipelines.
  • Experience working with healthcare claims data, including insurance claims, billing records, or electronic health records.
  • Experience in fast-paced, high-growth startups with the ability to manage dynamic, ambiguous analytical priorities and build frameworks from scratch.
  • Proven ability to connect analytics insights to corporate risk mitigation strategy, proactively informing operational safeguards and platform guardrails.
