Security Data Engineer

Remote Remote $320k - $405k/yr Full time Posted 5d ago

Job Description

As a Security Data Engineer, you will build and operate security data systems that support Anthropic’s data center footprint. The work covers component-level hardware inventory and chain of custody, continuous control monitoring, and posture calculations that determine what each site is cleared to run.

What You’ll Own

  • Maintain a component-level record of what hardware exists, where it is located, and who has handled it, including the underlying data model, pipelines that combine inventory and custody events from multiple source systems, record change history, and tamper-evident storage.
  • Capture custody events as they occur (receipt, move, data wipe, decommission) and enforce authorization for who can record them through site and host workflows.
  • Produce per-control and per-site measures over time by transforming check outcomes, assessment results, and findings into measures mapped to relevant compliance frameworks, and support posture calculations used for site authorization decisions.
  • Implement coverage checks, reconciliation against source systems, and alerts for silent or drifting feeds so missing or incorrect records are identified the same day, and manage retention and access controls for the custody and evidence records.

Tools, Workflows, and Automation

  • Develop the tools and AI agents used to verify custody, access, and evidence, including reconciliation and audit evidence export capabilities and custody checks.
  • Create and retire recurring manual review work by building workflows that reduce review time and improve operational consistency.
  • Build query surfaces and reporting that engineers, site leads, and leadership use to review outcomes and measures.
  • Coordinate schemas and interfaces with engineers who operate the security monitoring platform to ensure downstream usability.

Core Engineering Expectations

  • Design and run production data systems, including relational schemas, change data capture, batch or streaming pipelines, and the supporting services, with correctness validated through coverage measurement, source reconciliation, and alerting for silence.
  • Integrate with external systems not controlled by your team (such as inventory tools, ticketing systems, and vendor APIs) and build data models that remain stable as sources change.
  • Ship software that functions reliably outside a central service, including host agents, site-local services, or edge collectors, while keeping field metrics correct and verifiable.
  • Work hands-on with data tied to physical assets or security controls, including hardware fleets, supply chain inventory, asset custody, and security or compliance program evidence.
  • Collaborate through code review, including reading and reviewing other people’s code and building with AI coding agents using Git.
  • Deliver a domain end-to-end by setting approach, designing, building with dependent teams and vendors, and operating it as a daily-used system.
  • Write SQL and at least one general-purpose programming language well.

Technologies

  • SQL
  • Git
  • Change data capture
  • Batch or streaming pipelines

Education and Qualifications

  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Required field of study: A field relevant to the role, based on coursework, training, or professional experience.

Years of experience will align with internal job level requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with asset management, supply chain, or warehouse systems where serialized tracking and custody transfer are central problems.
  • Experience with continuous control monitoring or metrics for security or compliance programs, including producing evidence accepted by assessors (for example, NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27001, or SOC 2).
  • Experience with risk or posture scoring that combines control results, findings, and other evidence into a decision-ready measure.
  • Familiarity with data center hardware lifecycles from receipt to decommission, including sites and parties you do not control such as colocation, cloud or GPU cloud operators, hardware manufacturers, and logistics providers.
  • Experience running software across many hosts or remote sites with versioned rollout and the ability to confirm each copy is reporting.
  • Experience building AI agents or automation that replaces recurring manual work.

Travel and Location

  • Role location: San Francisco.
  • Remote applicants: US-based candidates are considered.
  • Travel: Regular travel to data center sites is required because these are critical infrastructure.

Compensation

Annual salary range: $320,000 - $405,000 USD.

Benefits

  • Optional equity donation matching
  • Generous vacation and parental leave
  • Flexible working hours
  • Lovely office space for collaboration
  • Competitive compensation and benefits

Additional Information

  • Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, staff are expected to be in one of the offices at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more.
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic sponsors visas, but may not be able to sponsor every role and candidate.
  • Encouragement to apply even if you do not meet every qualification.
  • Recruiter email safety: Anthropic recruiters only contact candidates from @anthropic.com email addresses and will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day.
