Senior Applied AI Engineer, Agent Tools & Capabilities

Cupertino, CA $150k - $278k/yr Full time Posted 6d ago

Job Description

Build the next generation of intelligent assistant capabilities in an environment that prioritizes performance, privacy, and reliability. This role focuses on defining how agentic models reason, plan, and execute across Apple’s ecosystem, while owning the end-to-end quality loop and the platform abstractions that enable Siri and Apple Intelligence under strict device constraints.

What you’ll work on

  • Develop and optimize the platform and runtime that power Siri while meeting strict requirements for latency, memory, and power.
  • Advance agent capabilities through systematic, data-driven experimentation.
  • Own the quality loop from early feature development through iterative improvements using data collected from the field.
  • Partner closely with Apple teams across apps and frameworks to bring their experiences into Siri and use real requirements to shape the platform.
  • Work effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where the frontier AI landscape evolves quickly.

Core responsibilities

  • Craft the language the model sees and design tool representations.
  • Build orchestration systems that let models plan and reason through novel capabilities efficiently.
  • Ensure reliable and accurate behavior across a large action space while keeping inference cost minimal.
  • Engineer an execution layer optimized for devices across the lineup, from Macs and iPhones to Apple Watch.
  • Embed safety, security, and privacy architecture directly into the platform.
  • Design realistic evals, diagnose failure modes, and connect platform infrastructure with foundation modeling to improve dependable, day-to-day capabilities.

Requirements

  • Experience in prompt engineering, tool representation, or tool retrieval.
  • Experience designing evals and improving model quality with data.
  • Familiarity with App Intents or other Apple frameworks.
  • Strong API design skills and a record of building platforms for other developers.
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, plus 3+ years of industry experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Swift, C++, Objective-C, or Python.
  • Hands-on experience shipping production systems built around LLMs.
  • Knowledge of agentic systems, including planning, orchestration, and multi-step tool use.
  • Ability to communicate and deliver in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.

Technologies
