Senior Data Scientist I – Bioassay Data Scientist
Job Description
AbbVie is hiring a Senior Data Scientist I specializing in bioassay data to support drug discovery through data-driven science. Based in North Chicago, IL, this onsite role sits within AbbVie’s Global Research, Informatics & Platform Solutions team, where you will help turn biological workflows into scalable data products.
In this position, you will define and expand a bioassay knowledge graph, harmonize knowledge from scientific sources, and deliver data visualizations and AI-enabled solutions that accelerate how teams work with complex, multi-platform data.
What you’ll do
- Harmonize biology data by applying wet lab experience and strong knowledge of biology data to harmonize knowledge graph content and derive knowledge statements.
- Communicate with scientists from Discovery teams to understand existing workflows, data flows, and requirements.
- Design and develop solutions by understanding client needs, proposing approaches, and independently building the appropriate solution.
- Build data solutions by conceiving, designing, and implementing technology that integrates, visualizes, and analyzes complex multi-platform data, including pipelines that load data into systems and warehouses.
- Integrate internal and external datasets by capturing data properly, leveraging ontologies, and applying a knowledge graph approach.
- Support downstream needs by resolving performance-related issues and collaborating with downstream systems to support bioassay-data-driven demands.
- Apply advanced analytics and automation by identifying opportunities for automation, AI, and advanced analytics to improve scientific workflows.
- Operate across multiple priorities by working on multiple, sometimes very different, projects at the same time.
- Contribute across drug discovery efforts by supporting a broad set of projects that enhance drug discovery and development.
Required qualifications
- Background in life sciences, biology, or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of the drug discovery and development process.
- Understanding of biological ontologies.
- Experience working with bioassay data.
- Understanding of knowledge graphs with the ability to enhance existing biology data.
- Ability to interface with stakeholders across internal IT disciplines (DBAs, architects, developers, and others) and external customers (discovery scientists, therapeutic area scientists, and others).
- Familiarity with data visualization and pipelining tools such as Spotfire or equivalent tools.
- Demonstrated data visualization experience using flexible plotting libraries and/or platforms such as D3, ggplot2, and/or plotly.
- Ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet timelines.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration, including documenting and presenting technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders.
