Job Description
The Staff Machine Learning Engineer will design, build, and deploy AI and ML systems along with full-stack applications for Walmart's Associate Productivity and Experience team. The role emphasizes hands-on data science, practical AI/ML development, and a customer-centric product mindset, with collaboration across cross-functional partners.
Compensation
Salary: USD 130,000 - 338,000 per year
Responsibilities
- Design, architect, and deploy AI/ML models and AI Agents; operate, monitor, and optimize these solutions.
- Work with Python and mainstream ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, and explore agentic tooling like Pydantic.
- Lead end-to-end system architecture for GenAI, AI, and data-intensive applications.
- Design, develop, and deploy full-stack applications.
- Develop production-grade real-time and batch machine learning services.
- Collaborate with product managers to craft user journeys, feedback loops, and analyze telemetry data.
- Identify or propose AI/ML use-cases to business teams, creating quick MVPs/POCs to support decision making.
- Own the product lifecycle end-to-end using technologies such as Java, Node.js, and React.js.
- Review designs and code, delivering technical solutions for complex requirements.
- Uphold governance and best practices, ensuring compliance with model and data governance standards.
- Adhere to Walmart policies, mission, values, ethics, and integrity standards.
- Innovation and Research: stay at the forefront of technology by researching emerging tools and methodologies.
- Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders to foster collaboration.
- Support coaching and training of team members to ensure confidence in software usage.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable, robust, user-centric full-stack, GenAI/AI/ML products and applications.
- Strong understanding of data structures.
- Hands-on experience in systems design, algorithms, and distributed systems.
- Industry-level experience building production-grade AI/ML systems at major technology companies or AI-native startups.
- Experience writing high-performance production-grade Python code.
- Exposure to cloud infrastructure such as OpenStack, Azure, GCP, or AWS.
- Experience working in Agile methodologies.
- Experience using CI/CD, logging, and metrics tools.
- A commitment to continuously improving, automating, and optimizing systems and tools.
- Strong computer science fundamentals in data structures and algorithms.
- Exposure to information retrieval, statistics, and machine learning.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related field, plus 4 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or a related area.
- Option 2: 6 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or a related area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related field, with 2 years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, AI systems, or related area.
- Prior work experience in accessibility best practices and creating inclusive digital experiences.
- Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and related accessibility integration.
