Build applied data and AI solutions for Google’s Global Patents team, using large patent datasets to support patent protection, defense, and monetization workflows. This Staff Data Scientist role is based in Washington, DC (onsite) and offers a salary range of USD 192,000 to 278,000 per year.
Google’s Global Patents team brings together innovators and attorneys focused on future technologies and legal challenges. In this position, you will help shape strategy to protect, defend, and capture value from Google’s technological innovation by creating and iterating on patent-specific data and AI solutions.
What you’ll do
- Lead the implementation of patent AI transformation initiatives with focus on patent prosecution and patent transaction use cases.
- Use patent and AI expertise to support engagement with the academic community and patent offices through empirical patent and innovation studies, and advise on AI implementations.
- Combine public patent data, internal data, and the existing tool stack to build custom AI solutions that support portfolio strategy, development, quality reviews, and other patent workflows.
- Develop internal patent transactions-specific solution approaches for reviewing third-party patent and licensing inquiries.
- Partner with outside counsel, internal legal team members, and dedicated patent specialist vendors to deliver scaled impact.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Engineering, or Sciences, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years working with patent data in a corporate or law firm environment.
- 7+ years using analytics to solve product or business problems, including coding (Python, R, SQL), querying databases, or performing statistical analysis.
- Experience working with national patent offices or academic institutions studying patent strategy, policy, and innovation economics using data science and AI.

Compensation and time off
- Salary: USD 192,000 - 278,000 per year
- Vacation: 20 days per year, accruing at 6.15 hours per pay period for the first five years of employment
- Sick time: 40 hours/year, increased to 69 hours/year for Seattle, including 5 discretionary sick days per instance
- Holidays: 13 paid days per year
