Job Description

Planned Systems International (PSI) is seeking a Senior AI Engineer to support the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information & Technology (OIT). This role leads the design, development, and implementation of AI, Generative AI, Machine Learning, and intelligent automation solutions for enterprise software engineering and operations under VA AI governance and Trustworthy AI principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop AI-powered applications using Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, and Machine Learning.
  • Build AI Copilots, AI Agents, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions to support software engineering, testing, documentation, and operational workflows.
  • Develop intelligent automation capabilities for test case generation, defect analysis, knowledge management, predictive analytics, and process optimization.
  • Integrate AI capabilities into enterprise applications through APIs, Azure cloud services, and DevSecOps pipelines.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies and rapidly build Proofs of Concept (PoCs).
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, testers, and business stakeholders to identify and implement AI solutions.
  • Ensure AI solutions comply with VA cybersecurity, privacy, accessibility, and Trustworthy AI requirements.
  • Manage multiple tasks and deadlines to deliver high-quality work on time.
  • Serve as a Brand Ambassador by educating colleagues on brand standards and ensuring visual communications reflect the organization’s identity.
  • Use advanced features in graphic and presentation tools (including PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite, and Visio) to automate and enhance design processes.
  • Perform technical editing for quality assurance of presentation and documentation prior to customer delivery.
  • Create and maintain consistent templates and documentation styles for PowerPoints, diagrams, and technical publications.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop user guides, process documentation, and new or updated templates and presentations.
  • Review team presentations to confirm process efficiency and ensure documentation completeness.
  • Create and maintain training material, including brown bags and instructional supplements, to support ongoing understanding and keep documentation current.
  • Provide high-level customer service by adopting the customer’s mission and working toward success.
  • Use AI to improve these functions.

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship (required for VA contract eligibility).
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of overall software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience developing AI, Machine Learning, or Generative AI solutions.
  • Strong programming experience with Python.
  • Experience with Azure OpenAI, OpenAI APIs, or similar LLM platforms.
  • Experience with LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or comparable AI frameworks.
  • Experience building Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications and AI Agents.
  • Experience developing REST APIs using FastAPI or similar frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Git, Azure DevOps, CI/CD, Docker, and cloud-native development.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other Federal agencies.
  • Experience with healthcare IT, EHRM, VistA, Oracle Health Millennium, FHIR, or HL7.
  • Experience with Azure AI Studio, Azure Machine Learning, vector databases, and prompt engineering.
  • Knowledge of NIST AI Risk Management Framework, Responsible AI, and Federal AI governance.
  • Current Moderate Background Investigation (MBI) and VA network access a plus.
