AI Engineer
Job Description
Workday is building the next generation of AI agents through its Agent Factory, a production-focused environment where small, senior, cross-functional teams turn agentic ideas into features used at global scale. In this role, you will help develop and integrate intelligence feature layers that connect orchestrated model behavior to user-facing experiences embedded in the Workday platform.
You will design and deliver production-grade AI capabilities, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines and the orchestration frameworks that help pre-trained foundational models power practical, reliable enterprise workflows.
What you’ll do
- Develop and integrate intelligent feature layers behind Workday’s next generation of AI agents.
- Concentrate on intelligence orchestration and product delivery by connecting the “brain” to the product.
- Implement how pre-trained foundational models (including LLMs and vision APIs) enable functional, user-facing enterprise software.
- Build Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines.
- Manage orchestration frameworks.
- Perform continuous prompt engineering.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, product managers, and designers to translate agentic workflows into responsive, reliable, user-centric features embedded in the Workday stack.
What you bring
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven record of developing, testing, and deploying production code.
- 1+ years of professional experience (or a strong, demonstrable portfolio) working with Large Language Models (LLMs), foundational models, or modern AI APIs.
- Demonstrated experience with AI orchestration concepts (for example, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar tooling) and a strong foundation in prompt engineering for building functional LLM-powered features.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience with API integration, backend application development, and managing data pipelines.
- 2+ years working with core development languages such as Python, plus modern software engineering workflows including CI/CD, testing frameworks, and version control.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent (Master’s preferred).
- Strong interest in user experience and a focus on applying AI capabilities to solve real customer problems.
- Familiarity with AI orchestration concepts, vector databases, semantic search, and prompt optimization techniques.
- Experience with data exploration, transformation, and integrating varied data sources to contextually ground AI outputs.
- Ability to thrive in a team environment with collaboration across software development, product management, and UX design.
- Eagerness to keep pace with advances in generative AI, autonomous agents, and LLM application design.
Tech you’ll work with
- Python
- LLMs
- Vision APIs
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

- Version control
Team and role context
- Agent Factory is where Workday builds its next chapter.
- Teams form small, senior, cross-functional groups combining product leaders, AI engineers, and full-stack builders to create intelligent agents used by millions every day.
- This role focuses on production-grade AI, deeply embedded into Workday’s platform, not research experiments.
- Teams own problems end to end and collaborate tightly across disciplines to solve real customer challenges at global scale.
- The work sits at the intersection of AI, platform architecture, and human workflows, with autonomy to shape how agents reason, act, and scale responsibly.
- Work occurs within a collaborative, cross-functional pod.
