AI Engineer III
Job Description
Premera Blue Cross is hiring an AI Engineer III for a remote/telecommuter role in the United States. In this position, you will help design and deliver dependable AI/ML systems, moving solutions from concept through production while collaborating cross-functionally to prototype, deploy, and maintain models at scale.
Premera supports employees with medical, vision, and dental coverage with low employee premiums, plus life and disability insurance, retirement programs including a 401K employer match and a pension plan vested after 3 years of service. You’ll also have access to wellness incentives with mental well-being resources for you and your dependents, generous paid time off, and tuition assistance for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Additional perks include commuter benefits, free on-site parking, and subsidized on-campus cafes. The role includes on-site activities such as health and wellness events and coffee connects, and access to a fitness and well-being center with in-person and virtual workouts and nutritional counseling.
Responsibilities

- Build prototypes and minimum viable products to validate AI/ML approaches before committing substantial resources.
- Develop, refine, and productionize AI systems using cloud resources such as Azure OpenAI, Azure ML, and Cognitive Services.
- Contribute to robust data pipelines that support model evolution and production systems.
- Define specifications for low-latency APIs and services used to deploy AI models and integrate them into applications.
- Supervise and sustain AI systems in production to support consistent accuracy and reliability.
- Work within a team that practices principled, agile-like development.
- Create and maintain documentation aligned with team procedures, corporate policies, and expectations.
- Ensure peer review for assigned work and participate in peer reviews for others as requested.
- Guide junior AI engineers using AI/ML and industry best practices and methodologies.
- Stay current on new tools and concepts through documentation, literature, and ongoing skills development.
- Support and participate in meetings with external stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, or 2+ years of experience in a related, professional IT/analytics position.
- Minimum 3 years of industry experience developing, deploying, and maintaining AI or ML systems (up to two years may be substituted with an AI-centered Master’s/PhD or AI Engineering certifications).
- At least 4 years developing deep learning models using TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLX, JAX, or other modern deep learning frameworks (experience with older libraries such as Theano or Caffe is accepted). Graduate education or research experience may supplement.
- Knowledge and experience implementing ethical AI practices, including at least 2 years on projects requiring explainable AI, fairness, and bias mitigation.
- Minimum 3 years proficiency with advanced prompt engineering (including General Knowledge Prompting and ReAct), using libraries such as LangChain or OpenPrompt, and capability to mitigate prompt injection attacks using tools like Guardrails or PromptInject.
- Minimum 3 years productionizing AI models, including scalable data pipelines and robust monitoring systems.
- 3+ years working in Agile-like teams and environments.
- Experience with deep learning architectures including CNNs, transformers, GANs, LSTMs, GNNs, Autoencoders, Diffusion Models, and Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (NODEs).
- Proficiency debugging AI systems and improving performance via hyperparameter tuning and similar techniques.
- Experience productionizing models through scalable data pipelines, low-latency services, and monitoring.
- Familiarity with software design patterns, microservices, distributed computing, container orchestration, and related architectures.
- Strong software engineering skills for secure, stable software systems at scale.
- Proficiency in Python and libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and scikit-learn, plus familiarity with traditional ML lifecycles.
