Associate Data Engineer
Job Description
Penumbra is building reliable data solutions that support analytics, reporting, and operational decision-making. In this onsite role in Alameda, CA, you will help develop and maintain the data pipelines, APIs, automation tools, and AI/ML technologies that keep teams moving with confidence.
What you’ll do
- Support operational and performance initiatives by identifying challenges and opportunities across competitive, scheduling, and resource-related activities.
- Collect, organize, and maintain data from sources including internal databases, historical performance records, operational systems, financial data, and stakeholder input.
- Partner with managers, coaches, and subject-matter experts to understand workflows, constraints, and operational objectives, so analyses reflect real-world conditions.
- Analyze data to uncover trends, patterns, and performance drivers tied to operational efficiency and strategic planning.
- Use quantitative and analytical methods to support planning and evaluation, including basic forecasting, comparative analysis, and scenario assessment.
- Assist with development, testing, and use of analytical models and tools for decision-making across performance optimization, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Evaluate alternative approaches by comparing outcomes, risks, and tradeoffs using data-driven methods.
- Create reports, summaries, and presentations that clearly communicate findings and recommendations to managers and stakeholders.
- Provide ongoing analytical support by updating analyses, monitoring outcomes, and refining assumptions as new data arrives.
- Contribute to cross-functional projects by sharing data analysis and operational insights that advance broader organizational goals.
Quality, security, and compliance
- Follow the Company’s Quality Management System (QMS) and applicable domestic and global quality system regulations, standards, and procedures.
- Understand and adhere to relevant security, privacy, and compliance principles and procedures.
- Help ensure other department members follow QMS requirements, regulations, standards, and procedures.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, or a related field with 1+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Prior work experience or internships in data science, data analysis, or a related area is a plus.
- Proficiency in Python for automation, API interaction, and rapid prototyping.
- Strong SQL skills.
- Familiarity with prompt engineering, basic NLP/Regex techniques, and foundational ML algorithms (regression, classification, clustering, and decision trees).
- Hands-on experience with Generative AI (GenAI) tools.
- Experience with Azure AI Studio, including configuring resources, deploying models, and fine-tuning.
- Proactive learning mindset to apply new techniques and tools in real-world projects.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize while handling multiple projects.

Compensation and benefits
Annual base salary: $80,000 - $131,000 per year.

Working conditions
- General office environment.
- Willingness and ability to work on site.
- Some lifting and moving up to 10 pounds, plus the ability to move between buildings and floors.
- Must be able to remain stationary and use a computer or standard office equipment for extensive periods.
- Must be able to read, prepare emails, and produce documents and spreadsheets.
- Must be able to move within the office and access file cabinets or supplies as needed.
- Must be able to communicate and exchange accurate information with employees at all levels daily.
