Job Description

As a Data Scientist within Grainger's Finance organization, you will apply machine learning and statistical analysis to uncover insights, generate business value, and support decision-making through scalable analytical solutions. This position is based in Lake Forest, Illinois, with a hybrid work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business partners to define problems and translate them into technical solutions using machine learning frameworks.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis and leverage deep business knowledge of customers and marketplace data to uncover new insights.
  • Work with high-volume, high-dimensional data from multiple sources, visualize patterns and anomalies, and perform feature engineering and selection.
  • Design and run experiments, collect data for statistical hypothesis testing, and derive inferences and recommendations.
  • Develop scalable, automated processes to support large-scale data analyses, model development, validation, and deployment.
  • Apply techniques such as classification, clustering, dimension reduction, regression, NLP, deep learning, and time series forecasting to address varied business problems.
  • Prepare and present materials that effectively communicate analytical results and recommendations to audiences.
  • Build expertise on Grainger's business operations, go-to-market model, and the broader MRO market.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field.
  • Master’s Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field.
  • Minimum 2 years of data science or statistics-related work experience.
  • Proficiency with Snowflake, Teradata, or Oracle and SQL querying.
  • Proficiency in at least one data science programming language (Python or R) and experience with structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques including classification, clustering, dimension reduction, regression, NLP, and time series modeling.
  • Experience with experimental design, outlier detection methods, and statistical hypothesis testing.
  • Experience with data visualization techniques and tools.
  • Ability to translate work into presentations suitable for non-technical audiences.
  • Proven collaboration with business partners and colleagues.

Compensation

The anticipated base pay range for this role is USD 87,200.00 – 145,300.00. The position is eligible for an incentive target of up to 5% based on individual and company performance, as defined by the current incentive program terms.
