Job Description

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is hiring a Data Scientist on the Health Economics and Reporting team in Baltimore, MD (hybrid) to solve business problems using advanced analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Mine and extract data, apply algorithms, and derive actionable insights across analytics, reporting, and data governance for Member Identification/Stratification (ID/STRAT), Attribution/Program Assignment, Data Extracts/Sharing, Population Health Management, Predictive Modeling, and Program Evaluation.
  • Support AI implementations and partner with IT/Data Management teams to enable execution.
  • Provide vendor support for tools and services including Milliman MedInsights and related functions.
  • Explore datasets to understand data profiles and limitations.
  • Identify and evaluate data patterns using existing data science tools.
  • Translate business priorities into data science deliverables.
  • Review trends in the ML/AI/DS landscape and help integrate new ML/AI designs into solutions and products.
  • Assist business units with innovation related to organizational performance.
  • Act as a liaison between analytics, business units, and other departments, including communication and education on AI, machine learning, and statistical models.

Requirements

  • Independent execution: ability to work independently without detailed guidance.

  • Tooling: ability to leverage a variety of data science tools and frameworks.
  • Modeling expertise: knowledge in model evaluation, tuning and performance, operationalization, and scalability of scientific techniques.
  • Engineering knowledge: knowledge of software engineering principles and practices.
  • Statistical modeling: proficiency in statistical modeling applications.
  • Healthcare analytics: prior healthcare analytics experience is required.
  • Experience delivering: experience delivering work consistently and transparently to internal and external business partners.
  • Deadlines and service excellence: meet established deadlines and handle multiple customer service demands from internal and external customers within set expectations.
  • Customer service approach: communicate effectively and provide positive customer service to internal and external customers, including demanding or challenging customers.
  • Additional experience: experience in relevant domains (as stated).

Purpose / Role Focus

  • Data Scientist role focused on ID/STRAT and Program Evaluation within the Health Economics and Reporting team.
  • Identifies and solves business problems using numerical techniques, algorithms, and models across statistical modeling, machine learning, operations research, and data mining.
  • Supports data science initiatives with advanced analytical capabilities.
  • Coordinates across product teams and with customers and educators on AI/ML/statistical models.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • No direct reports, with expectation to assist in guiding and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • May lead a team of matrixed resources.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Substitution: in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required in addition to required work experience.
  • Experience: 3 years of relevant work experience.

Salary

  • USD 88,560 - 175,890 per year

Location and Work Model

  • Must be located in the Maryland, Washington, DC, or Northern Virginia (DMV) area.
  • Hybrid work model: part of the week working from home and part at a CareFirst location based on business needs and weekly deliverables.
  • Location: Baltimore, MD (hybrid).
