Job Description

Unum Group is hiring a developing Data Scientist to turn data into actionable insights and work closely with stakeholders to deliver measurable business value. The role focuses on expanding technical depth in programming, applied statistics, and data manipulation while strengthening business context.

Role Overview

In this position, you will develop analytical solutions, build modeling-ready data assets, and support the use of machine learning for explanation, forecasting, and risk identification. Work will be primarily within functional project areas with direction and review from your manager.

You will also be expected to continuously grow business knowledge and take initiative in identifying and executing analytical approaches for assigned projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute analytical solutions using statistical, optimization, simulation, and data mining methods, with an emphasis on producing actionable insights and partnering to deliver business value.
  • Integrate large volumes of data from multiple sources, including DB2, SQL Server, Web API, and Teradata, to create data assets and support analyses.
  • Apply validation, aggregation, and reconciliation techniques to build a rich, modeling-ready data framework.
  • Construct predictive machine learning models to explain and understand observed events, forecast expected behavior, or identify risk through scoring or clustering.
  • Interpret results effectively and communicate findings and potential value to your manager.
  • Support solution integration into existing business processes using automation techniques.
  • Stay current on the theory and application of current and emerging statistical methods and tools.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Education

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (preferred).
  • Experience: 2 years professional experience (preferred) or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Skills and Capabilities

You should have deep expertise in at least one of the following skill areas, with basic capability in the others:

  • Core Data Science Capabilities: Programming & Process Automation with experience using APIs, file I/O, databases, and analysis libraries. Familiarity with programming in Jupyter notebooks and/or statistical packages. Experience with process mapping and application of scripting languages to automate processes, plus exposure to data mining and web scraping.
  • Core Data Science Capabilities: Data Visualization with working knowledge of two or more data visualization tools and proficiency in static data visualization. Basic understanding of dynamic data visualization.
  • Core Data Science Capabilities: Statistics & Statistical Modeling with a solid understanding of statistical inference and regression. Basic understanding of machine learning techniques, including random forests and neural nets. Basic understanding of feature selection and extraction, potentially including analysis of categorical data, multiple comparisons, Central Limit Theorem, bootstrapping, and permutation tests.
  • ETL Skillsets (preferred): Expertise writing complex SQL queries that join multiple tables/databases. Ability to independently explore databases/tables based on a business problem to identify best data sources. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex SQL queries written by others with little guidance.
  • Core business capabilities: basic communication skills, exposure to the financial services industry, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize while working on multiple projects and tracking due dates.
  • Leadership capabilities: ability to coach or mentor team members, respond quickly and positively to change, and adhere to technical best practices by collaborating with team members to deliver high-quality output.
  • Preferred characteristics: entrepreneurial self-starter; thorough, results-oriented problem-solver; lifelong learner with curiosity; basic understanding of their organization.

Compensation

Base salary range: USD 60,500 - 123,400 per year.
