Job Description

GCI is seeking an IT Data Engineer II to help build and maintain the supporting framework behind enterprise data activities. In this role, you will focus on acquiring, transforming, and delivering data used for analysis, while also developing and testing analytics infrastructure that leverages existing data platforms to meet data-related requests.

What you’ll do

  • Gather and translate business and functional requirements into clear, actionable technical specifications and deliverables.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipeline architecture for analytics and advanced data workloads.
  • Create and maintain efficient ETL/ELT pipelines using relevant tools and custom code.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that satisfy functional and non-functional business requirements.
  • Build infrastructure to support optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources.
  • Develop analytics tools that use the data pipeline to produce actionable insights for areas such as customer acquisition and operational efficiency.
  • Resolve complex technical data issues across pipelines and data platforms.
  • Tune SQL queries and optimize pipelines and infrastructure for performance and cost efficiency.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to address data-related technical issues and support data infrastructure needs.
  • Perform thorough quality assurance reviews of modules to validate functionality, code integrity, performance, and compliance with design and coding standards.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements, including automation of manual work, optimization of data delivery, and redesigning infrastructure for scalability.
  • Conduct root cause analysis, document findings clearly, and drive effective data-driven solutions.
  • Educate corporate users on data usage, literacy, and governance best practices to support consistent decision-making.
  • Support a culture of professional, proactive, results-driven collaboration, including open communication and shared accountability.
  • Strengthen job proficiency through continuous learning and role-specific training.

Required education and experience

  • Minimum experience: 4 years.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related field.
  • Additional requirement: A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis.

Minimum and preferred qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in corporate data analytics, real-time analytics and visualization tools, data collection and/or data pipelines, or related background.
  • Broad working knowledge of big data processing on cloud platforms.
  • Preferred: Experience with relational and non-relational databases and batch data sources.
  • Preferred: Experience with Azure-based data solutions.
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience with Databricks, including Delta Lake, Spark Declarative Pipelines, Spark Structured Streaming, and Lakeflow Connect.
  • Preferred: Experience with modern data architectures, including Medallion Architecture.
  • Preferred: Relevant telecom industry or job-specific certifications.

Working conditions and logistics

  • Location: United States (onsite).
  • Driving requirement: May require access to reliable transportation for occasional travel.
  • Physical/work conditions: Work is primarily sedentary and involves daily computer usage.
  • Schedule: Ability to work shifts as assigned, operate in a standard office/home office setting, and work additional time when necessary (including weekends, holidays, and before or after normal hours).
  • Communication and teamwork: Ability to communicate effectively, work well in a team environment, and collaborate with diverse groups.
  • Remote compliance: Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.

Role level

  • This is an intermediate level position with broad knowledge and proficiency in areas of responsibility.
  • Performs moderately complex tasks with general instruction on routine work and new assignments.
  • Works under moderate supervision with latitude for independent judgment.
  • Supports higher level staff on more complex projects.
  • Provides training and guidance to lower-level staff.
