Job Description

Lead the development and deployment of advanced analytical models and machine learning solutions to inform Walmart's strategic business decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, validate, and implement cutting edge ML models and AI solutions aligned with business goals.
  • Examine complex business challenges to craft data driven strategies and quantify potential impact.
  • Identify, evaluate, and validate data sources ensuring quality and relevance for modeling and analytics.
  • Lead model evaluation, tuning, and lifecycle management to maintain accuracy, robustness, and scalability.
  • Partner with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions and actionable insights.
  • Mentor team members on analytical methods, coding standards, and new technologies.
  • Present findings through compelling data visualization and storytelling to influence decisions.

Requirements

  • Option 1: Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 2: Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • 7 years' experience in an analytics or related field
  • Extensive experience in ML, deep learning, and embedding strategies to develop and deploy scalable data science solutions.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including Python and SQL, with strong coding and testing capabilities.
  • Expertise in data strategy, quality assessment, and source identification to ensure reliable and fit‑for‑purpose data.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, validate, and optimize analytical models using techniques such as Bayesian inference and neural networks.
  • Skilled in MLOps practices and cloud platforms like GCP for model deployment and lifecycle management.
  • Strong business acumen to translate complex data insights into actionable strategies aligned with organizational goals.
  • Experience mentoring teams and guiding technical development to foster continuous innovation.

Role Summary

As a Principal Data Scientist, you will lead the development and deployment of advanced analytical models and machine learning solutions that drive strategic business decisions. The role requires deep expertise in coding, statistics, and deep learning to translate complex data into actionable insights. You will collaborate across functions to identify data sources, design scalable solutions, and mentor team members, with your work directly impacting business outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 2: Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 3: 7 years' experience in an analytics or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data science, machine learning, optimization models, PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics, publications or active peer reviewer in related journals or conference
  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R
  • Using open source frameworks such as scikit learn, tensorflow, torch
  • Experience with accessibility best practices, WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and creating inclusive digital experiences aligned with Walmart accessibility guidelines
