Principal Data Scientist (Credit Risk for Small Business and Commercial)
Job Description
Lead advanced credit risk analytics for small business and commercial lending at Navy Federal Credit Union in Vienna, VA.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and evaluate large and complex predictive models and advanced algorithms
- Test hypotheses, analyze results, and interpret findings to support decision-making
- Develop actionable insights and recommendations across the lending lifecycle
- Develop and code complex software programs, algorithms, and automated processes
- Select the right course of action using evaluation, judgment, and interpretation
- Deliver innovative solutions through exploratory data analysis on complex, high-dimensional datasets
- Transform data into charts, tables, or formats that help stakeholders make effective decisions
- Document analyses and communicate results using effective written and verbal communication to diverse stakeholder groups
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with team members, subject matter experts, and leaders
- Lead moderate to large projects and initiatives
- Model and promote best practices and ethical AI
- Partner with senior management on complex issues
- Assist with development and enhancement of practices, procedures, and instructions
- Serve as a technical resource for other team members
- Mentor lower levels
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience with requisite competencies
- Complete knowledge and full understanding of specialization
- Statistics, machine learning, and data mining experience, including data auditing, aggregation, reconciliation, and visualization
- Programming and advanced technical skills including data modeling, simulation, and advanced mathematics
- Experience across the model lifecycle execution
- SQL, R, Python, Hadoop, SAS, SPSS, Scala, and AWS
- Technical writing skills
- Data storytelling and technical presentation skills
- Research skills, interpersonal skills, communication, and collaboration
- Advanced knowledge of procedures, instructions, and validation techniques
- Model development experience and strong critical thinking
- Ability to identify constraints and risks, solve problems, and use independent judgment with initiative
- Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computers Science, Engineering, or a similar quantitative field
- Master’s or doctoral degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline
- Demonstrated success applying data science, machine learning, or advanced analytics to small business banking and commercial lending strategies
- Deep experience designing and implementing analytical solutions across the lending lifecycle, including originations, underwriting, credit decisioning, pricing, account management, portfolio monitoring, and collections
- Strong command of small business credit risk, cash flow underwriting, commercial credit data, financial statements, transaction data, and alternative data sources
- Proven ability to influence senior leaders and partner across lending product, credit risk, underwriting, operations, and model risk to translate analytical insights into strategic business decisions
