Senior Data Scientist
Job Description
The Senior Data Scientist role at Epia Neuro is an individual-contributor position on the Research team, focused on analyzing neural and behavioral data to deliver rigorous findings. The work includes decoding, validation of signal quality, and the development of reproducible analysis pipelines that can be handed off to software for research-grade implementation.
Location and Work Setup
The role is based in Alameda, CA (onsite) in the San Francisco Bay Area. On-site presence is expected at least 3 days per week from the Alameda headquarters.
Salary and Compensation
- Base salary: USD 140,000 - 165,000 per year
- Equity: included
Responsibilities
- Own research study analysis end to end, from analysis strategy and statistical design through figures, readouts, and publications.
- Characterize and validate in vivo recording performance of the neural interface, including signal quality, noise, artifacts, and stability, and establish preprocessing and quality control that downstream analyses rely on.
- Develop and evaluate decoding models that connect neural activity to behavior, including models used in closed-loop study sessions.
- Explore neural and behavioral datasets, including pose estimation and kinematics, to surface new variables and research directions.
- Build reproducible analysis pipelines and help define data standards across studies.
- Partner with study scientists on analysis plans and study design, communicate results to scientists, engineers, and leadership, and coordinate with the Software team to hand off research-grade methods and code.
Requirements
- Education: PhD in neuroscience, neural engineering, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related quantitative field, or a Master’s degree in one of these fields with 4+ years of relevant experience in a research-focused role.
- Hands-on experience analyzing continuous neural time-series data, ideally field potentials such as ECoG, sEEG, LFP, or EEG.
- Strong foundation in neural signal processing, including filtering, spectral analysis (for example, band power and time-frequency methods), artifact handling, and feature extraction.
- Applied machine learning expertise, including both supervised and unsupervised approaches, particularly for noisy biological data.
- Demonstrated ability to independently frame scientific questions, select and defend methods, and complete analyses through clear conclusions and actionable recommendations.
- Experience aligning neural recordings with behavioral and task data.
- Strong Python and scientific computing skills, including writing reusable, maintainable analysis code and using version control and sound data management practices.
- Clear written and verbal communication and comfort working across scientific and engineering teams.
Technologies
- Python
- Version control
Benefits
- Competitive base salary with equity
- 100% of healthcare coverage for you and your dependents
- Generous vacation policy
- Paid parental leave
- Work from a waterfront office in Alameda, CA, with access to collaborative spaces and labs
Nice to Have
- Experience with human intracranial recordings
- Experience with motor decoding, cognitive-state decoding, or closed-loop BCI
- Experience with video-based pose estimation or kinematic analysis
- Experience building data pipelines or standards shared across studies
- Experience with cloud-based data processing
