Senior Environmental GIS/Data Scientist
Job Description
This part-time Senior Environmental GIS/Data Scientist role in Chicago, IL supports environmental GIS and data management engagements for federal, state, and commercial clients. The position serves as a subject-matter expert, providing high-level technical direction across geospatial and environmental database management, data analysis and reporting, surveying and 3D point cloud workflows, and static plus interactive web-based visualization solutions.
Role Responsibilities
- Support environmental projects and task orders, including site investigations, regulatory compliance activities, and remedial actions.
- Assist with management and administration of enterprise GIS environments.
- Interpret environmental data, including performing complex geostatistical analyses such as spatial interpolation and raster algebra.
- Develop data visualization products, including static outputs and interactive web-based solutions with a focus on Esri applications.
- Support development and maintenance of environment data management workflows, including data architecture and workflow design.
- Support field data collection activities, including surveying and 3D point cloud data acquisition and processing.
- Communicate with project clients, vendors, and subcontractors to coordinate technical deliverables.
- Support development and implementation of environmental plans and procedures.
- Develop and/or deliver training, planning, and preparedness efforts under federal and state contracts.
- Contribute to emergency preparedness and response and disaster recovery activities, with potential support within an incident management structure or as a technical subject matter resource.
- Prepare technical report deliverables, including data evaluation, interpretation, and presentation.
- Mentor junior staff.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience.
- Extensive experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Enterprise components, including Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Datastore, ArcGIS GeoEvent Server, and ArcGIS Spatiotemporal Datastore.
- Extensive experience developing data visualization products, including static products using ArcGIS Pro or similar software and interactive web-based products using ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS.
- Experience designing and/or evaluating environmental data management workflows, including use of common environmental software and underlying applications (Scribe, EQuIS, SQL Server).
- Detailed knowledge of surveying techniques and technology, including the collection and processing of 3D point cloud datasets.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills (written and verbal). Must be highly motivated, customer focused, and able to work effectively in a team environment.
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Drive on a regular basis; pass a motor vehicle record background check; maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER and 8-Hour refresher certifications.
Physical Requirements
- Be able to walk around project sites in all types of terrain and be physically able to carry up to 35 pounds of equipment.
- Be able to complete medical monitoring program requirements.
Work Environment
- Responsibilities may include project site visits and field work up to approximately 10%, which could include overnight travel.
- Outdoor site work may occur in the U.S. across all seasons, including peak summer and winter conditions.
- This part-time position requires approximately 10% travel.
- Most work will be performed on a hybrid schedule with office and remote work flexibility.
- Work will occur during standard work hours, with potential for occasional emergency response support during nights and weekends.
- Driving may be required on an occasional basis, subject to passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
