Site AI Engineer
Job Description
Suffolk Construction Company, Inc. is seeking a Site AI Engineer to operate on-site in New Haven, CT, collaborating directly with project AI Champions to turn AI concepts into practical site improvements. In this role you will redesign workflows and deploy AI agents that streamline reporting, accelerate RFIs, enhance lookahead planning, provide progress updates, and improve materials tracking across projects.
Role
As the on-site catalyst, you will join Suffolk’s project teams across the United States to translate AI ideas into working solutions. Working with each project’s AI Champion, typically the project manager or superintendent, you will identify pain points, redesign processes, and roll out AI agents that reduce reporting effort, speed up RFIs, and bolster planning and tracking. When necessary, you will draft user stories and coordinate development with the central AI Studio to advance implementations on the Construction Site of the Future.
Responsibilities
- Lead discovery efforts to map value streams, assess data and process maturity, and identify high-impact, low-effort AI use cases.
- Assess current site workflows and underlying data, surface gaps, and partner with Operations Excellence to establish a phased improvement plan before deploying agents.
- Evaluate available market tools, run pilots, measure impact, and scale successful outcomes.
- Rapidly build MVP AI agents in platforms such as AWS Bedrock/SageMaker and ChatGPT Enterprise, wiring front-end interfaces to Teams/SharePoint and back-end data sources like Databricks Lakehouse or AWS services.
- Design and maintain enterprise-grade engineering pipelines, including Agentic RAG workflows backed by search indices, automate infrastructure with CI/CD tooling, and monitor latency, cost, adoption, and drift.
- Partner with Data Engineering to design ETL pipelines, API integrations, and event-driven connectors feeding agents and RAG systems.
- Coordinate cross-cloud deployment, combining AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, and Azure OpenAI behind secure connectors for smooth rollout of agents.
- Lead change enablement by training crews, gathering feedback, iterating, and tracking adoption and ROI metrics, applying behavior-change principles to embed agents into daily routines and SOPs.
- Communicate outcomes to project leadership and clients, contributing use cases and playbooks to Suffolk’s Construction Site of the Future initiatives.
- Draft clear user stories, data specifications, and acceptance criteria for complex solutions requiring central AI and Data teams, and facilitate transitions to enterprise-scale deployment.
- Ensure on-site AI tools comply with Suffolk’s information security, data governance, and client confidentiality standards.
Requirements
- 4–6+ years in AI engineering or full-stack data applications, or data science, with at least 2+ years building production LLM/RAG/Agentic solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in CS, Engineering, Physics, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Hands-on experience in construction or heavy process industries (manufacturing, oil & gas, chemicals) is a strong plus.
- Proven process excellence background; Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt is a major plus, with ability to diagnose process and data gaps and support change management with Operations Excellence.
- Strong facilitation and communication skills.
- Hands-on experience with Claude Code, Devin AI, MS Copilot, and other coding assistants.
- Programming and data stack: Python, SQL, FastAPI, Databricks Lakehouse, and vector stores.
- DevOps and IaC: GitHub Actions, Terraform or CloudFormation automation, or equivalent CI/CD tooling; solid Git/GitHub discipline.
- ETL/ELT design understanding, experience with Airflow or Databricks Workflows, and REST/GraphQL API development; collaborative work with Data Engineering on end-to-end pipelines.
- Willing and able to travel to active job sites.
