Sr AI Engineer II - Enterprise Architecture

American Express is seeking a Senior AI Engineer II to help design and deliver production-grade agentic AI capabilities grounded in real financial data, real customers, and real regulatory requirements. This hybrid role in New York, NY focuses on end-to-end engineering work across customer-facing LLM features, agentic automation of financial workflows, and internal AI tooling that supports other engineers.

In this position, you will tackle complex and ambiguous problems and translate them into reliable systems that can be shipped and depended on in a regulated financial environment. The work is not research-only, with a strong emphasis on autonomy, engineering judgment, and ownership after launch.

Responsibilities

• Convert complex, ambiguous problems into production-grade agentic systems that use real financial data, support real customers, and comply with regulatory requirements.
• Lead solution work end to end, collaborating with product and design on shaping, building, and shipping production code, and owning delivery after launch.
• Build customer-facing LLM-powered features.
• Develop agentic systems that automate financial workflows.
• Create internal AI capabilities that help other engineers build safely and efficiently with AI.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including meaningful production experience with LLMs or applied ML systems.
• Demonstrated track record shipping AI-powered or agentic systems that real users rely on.
• Strong engineering fundamentals across backend systems, APIs, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience with modern LLM tooling and agentic patterns and architectures.
• Fluency with AI-assisted and agentic development workflows.
• Strong ownership mindset and sound technical judgment.
• Comfort operating amid ambiguity and turning it into shipped, reliable product.
• Product mindset with customer orientation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building agentic systems in fintech or other regulated industries.
• Experience as a founding engineer or early technical contributor in high-growth environments.
• Proven ability to ship technically complex systems in regulated contexts that customers actively rely on.
• Meaningful open-source contributions, particularly in AI or developer tooling.
