Job Description

Capital One is building responsible, reliable AI capabilities through its Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, and this role helps drive that work end to end. As a Sr. Distinguished AI Engineer, you will design and deliver AI software components that support foundation model training and large language model (LLM) production workloads, with an emphasis on evaluation, guardrails, experimentation, governance, and observability.

This position sits within IFX, a group that partners across the company to advance science and AI engineering and to deploy proprietary solutions that deliver value to millions of customers. You will work closely with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to bring AI-powered products to associates and customers.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers, to deliver AI-powered products that shape how associates work and how customers engage with Capital One.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components such as foundation model training, LLM inference, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
  • Apply a broad ecosystem of Open Source and SaaS AI technologies, including AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch, along with additional tools in your stack.
  • Develop and introduce state-of-the-art LLM optimization techniques to improve production system performance across scalability, cost, latency, and throughput.
  • Help shape the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies; or a Master’s degree in a related field plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
  • At least 10 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, or Java.

Compensation and incentives

McLean, VA (remote): USD 286,200 - 326,700 per year.

This role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
