Analytics Engineer
Job Description
Chapter One seeks a mid-level Analytics Engineer to design, build, and optimize scalable analytical data models in PostgreSQL hosted on Heroku, delivering insights through Sigma. This role reports to the Director of Data and requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable, production-grade analytical data models in a PostgreSQL database.
- Create, maintain, and optimize SQL-based ELT transformations within the Heroku/Postgres environment.
- Translate business and reporting needs into clean, reusable data transformations and views.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to define metrics and reporting logic.
- Develop and enhance Sigma dashboards and data models to improve clarity, usability, and trust in metrics.
- Improve query performance, indexing strategies, and materialization approaches in Postgres.
- Maintain and improve existing transformation workflows for reliability and maintainability.
- Implement data quality checks, documentation, and testing practices.
- Establish and follow data modeling and naming standards across the analytics layer.
- Investigate and resolve data discrepancies and performance issues.
Requirements
- 2 to 5 years of experience in analytics engineering, data analytics, or a related data role.
- Direct experience working with PostgreSQL in an analytics context.
- Experience supporting business intelligence and reporting workflows.
- Advanced SQL proficiency, including complex joins and common table expressions.
- Advanced SQL proficiency with window functions.
- Advanced SQL proficiency with query performance tuning.
- Advanced SQL proficiency with indexing strategies in Postgres.
- Strong experience building analytical models in PostgreSQL.
- Hands-on experience with Heroku-hosted data environments or similar PaaS platforms.
- Proficiency building dashboards and data models in Sigma or comparable BI tools.
- Solid understanding of dimensional modeling (facts, dimensions, grain, slowly changing dimensions).
- Experience with Git-based version control.
