Analytics Engineer
Job Description
Cenergy International is hiring a fixed-term Analytics Engineer contractor to stabilize and improve production reporting data pipelines. This role is focused on troubleshooting stalled or broken workflows, modernizing pipeline operations, and documenting systems so they can be maintained reliably going forward.
Based in Sacramento, CA (remote), you will work from a prioritized backlog with weekly check-ins with the hiring manager. The work is primarily stabilization and cleanup rather than building new product features.
What you’ll do
- Diagnose and repair stalled or broken data pipelines that feed reporting dashboards.
- Replace drop-and-recreate table builds with in-place writes while preserving existing access permissions.
- Migrate workflow alerting from deprecated notification settings to team distribution lists.
- Inventory Tableau published data sources and embedded SQL to find duplicated logic and downstream consumers.
- Safely retire unused workflows and tables after confirming they have no active consumers.
- Build freshness and staleness checks for dashboard data extracts.
- Provide first-line business-hours triage for in-scope workflow failures (approximately 4 hours per week), with no on-call and no external communication.
- Validate that new product types flow correctly into cost reporting, then document the first reporting cycle reconciliation.
- Create runbooks for workflows touched during the engagement.
- Meet weekly with the hiring manager to review progress.
- Submit all code changes via pull-request review before merging.
What you bring
- 3+ years of experience in analytics or data engineering, including hands-on ownership of production pipelines.
- Strong SQL experience with a distributed query engine such as Trino, Presto, or similar.
- Proficiency with Python and pandas for data processing and validation.
- Experience building and maintaining scheduled workflows using Airflow or a similar orchestration tool.
- Working knowledge of Tableau published data sources and extracts.
- Comfort working with Git and pull-request workflows.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair pipelines you did not originally build, including systems with incomplete documentation.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
Tools you’ll use
SQL, Trino, Presto, Python, pandas, Airflow, Tableau, Git, Pull request, Jupyter notebooks, papermill, Airtable, Iceberg, Hive.
Nice to have
- Experience working with billing, cost, or financial reporting data.
- Experience with Jupyter notebooks and parameterized notebook execution using papermill.
- Experience with Airtable for read-only reporting.
- Familiarity with Iceberg or Hive table formats.
- Background in media, localization, or content supply chain data.
Compensation: USD 85 - 95 per hour. Experience: 3+ years. Job type: contract.
