Associate Data Scientist
Job Description

The Associate Data Scientist role focuses on analytics that uncover business opportunities, answer business questions, and deliver data-driven business solutions using statistical models and machine learning. You’ll partner across departments, support project reporting and monitoring, and contribute to implementation-ready data work.
Responsibilities
- Work with business departments to understand processes, needs, and analysis priorities.
- Identify and use relevant data sources to perform project work and ad-hoc analyses using statistical and machine learning algorithms.
- Operate independently with some guidance from senior data scientists and management.
- Communicate analysis needs, results, and recommendations with colleagues and managers.
- Provide data support on projects and work with business teams on implementation.
- Create and maintain monitoring procedures and reports; look for ways to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Collect data from different applications and data infrastructure.
- Extract, transform, and load large amounts of structured or unstructured data from multiple sources.
- Clean and prepare data for analysis, including quality and consistency checks, and optimize data retrieval methods when needed.
- Create and maintain reports, graphs, and charts using dashboard and other programming approaches and MS Excel.
- Follow procedures to streamline analysis processes and support automated procedures to reduce cost and improve efficiency.
- Respond to business questions and requests related to reports.
- Communicate regularly with SMEs, EBI, MTS, and Management to learn job functions, relevant processes, and KPIs measuring business performance.
- Create presentations summarizing problems identified and potential solutions.
- Participate in meetings to share findings and recommendations.
- Maintain strong graphing skills and be proficient at preparing and presenting PowerPoint presentations.
Requirements
- Typically acquired through successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, computer science, or other related areas.
- Master’s Degree (or ACAS) preferred.
- Completion of the Summer 2026 Internship at Mercury Insurance.
- At least 2 years of experience in data mining and data/statistical analysis.
- At least 2 years experience with SQL and statistical software packages: Python, R, and/or SAS.
- Experience in insurance or financial service related fields.
- Demonstrated solid skills in data mining, machine learning, programming, and optimization.
- Knowledge of cloud-based advanced data and analytics environments.
- Passion for problem-solving and comfort with ambiguity.
- Ability to think conceptually, analytically, and creatively.
- Experience using R, Python, and other programming languages.
- Strong skills working with large structured and unstructured data sources.
- Experience with predictive modeling, general model building, and validation procedures.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Salary range: USD 68,457 - 161,815 per yearly
- An in-person interview may be required during the hiring process

- $83,670 to $161,815 (NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)
- $76,064 to $147,104 (NV, OR, AZ, CO, WY, TX, ND, MN, MO, IL, WI, FL, GA, MI, OH, VA, PA, DE, VT, NH, ME)
- $68,457 to $132,394 (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)
- In CA: Typical hiring range is $110,468 to $153,428
- The expected base salary will vary based on relevant experience, skills, and location.
