Associate Data Scientist - Estimating
Job Description
Mortenson is seeking an Associate Data Scientist focused on Estimating to join the team in Minneapolis with a hybrid work arrangement. The role centers on automating workflows, building predictive models, delivering data visualizations, and crafting custom AI and ML solutions to support the Estimating organization. This opportunity is well suited to recent graduates with a data science or related background who want to apply analytics to construction estimating.
Responsibilities
- Understand the assigned business challenge and develop a plan to identify, obtain, and analyze the necessary data to drive improved business performance in existing and new estimating processes
- Translate business requirements into business-ready analytics and AI solutions, including automated data workflows between source systems and enterprise data infrastructure
- Collect, clean, and analyze data from various sources including estimating platforms, project management systems, financial records, and field operations
- Conduct statistical analyses, randomized controlled trials, and predictive modeling
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data science, AI, and construction analytics
- Develop, analyze, and model estimating, operational, economic, and other organizational data
- Test and evaluate AI & ML solutions and functionalities within and beyond enterprise solutions
- Review program data consistently to provide corrective action, when necessary, based on information collected and current trends to maximize business performance
- Collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels
- All other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in data science, data analytics, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a data science or AI function, preferably including an internship in applied AI or data science
- Proficiency with predictive modeling, statistical analysis, data mining, and data visualization
- Experience with large language models, multimodal models, or generative AI/ML (eg. Azure AI Foundry, Google Vertex)
- Proficiency in Python, SQL, or similar coding languages and platforms including IDEs such as Jupyter Notebook, Spyder, Visual Studio Code
- Experience working with ML frameworks, Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and related data tools
- Analytical thinker with great attention to detail
- Proven ability to follow complex instructions
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Willingness to advance business ideas that are sometimes unstructured and without clearly defined outcomes
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding of business operations
- Active listening and effective communication with openness to diverse input and feedback
- Ability to travel up to approximately 10%
