Job Description

The Data Analyst role at Lake Michigan College supports institutional and enrollment management priorities through data collection, advanced reporting, and fulfillment of stakeholder information requests. This position is based onsite in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage data collection, analysis, and reporting deliverables, including datasets, dashboards, and publications using Power BI and SSRS.
  • Handle customer information requests by triaging and fulfilling requests through the IR service portal, documenting requirements, sources, and definitions.
  • Develop and maintain enterprise reporting with Power BI and SSRS, including paginated reports, dashboards, datasets, and data models aligned to institutional standards.
  • Partner with institutional stakeholders to gather, understand, and define business requirements for reporting and analytics projects.
  • Apply appropriate statistical techniques and ensure reproducibility of methods to support stakeholder reporting needs.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to reporting data flows, queries, and scheduled report delivery for production and/or application development.
  • Use data and system analysis to identify opportunities to improve and automate business processes, and collaborate on process improvement recommendations.
  • Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries and stored procedures across Oracle and SQL Server, including implementation and monitoring of reporting data pipelines.
  • Create validation checks and audit trails and maintain current knowledge of data storage and management best practices.
  • Design and maintain reporting semantic layers/data models that meet requirements efficiently and reliably.
  • Track project performance by analyzing progress toward short- and long-term goals.
  • Update and maintain the institutional reporting calendar, sequence and track cross-department deliverables, and ensure on-time publication and compliance submissions.
  • Coordinate access provisioning for reporting content and data sources with IT/IR, managing security roles consistent with FERPA and institutional policy.
  • Develop and enforce reporting style guides and visualization standards; review and validate enterprise reports prior to release for accuracy, accessibility, and consistency.
  • Support ad hoc data collection, data analysis, and report development.
  • Develop, enforce, and maintain documentation, internal data project manuals, and technical materials for internal and end-user training purposes.
  • Ensure report and dashboard design aligns with WCAG, including color-blind-safe palettes, alt-text, and narrative summaries.
  • Maintain communication with stakeholders to gather requirements and provide progress updates.
  • Collaborate with internal IT, ERP, and IR teams to share best practices and user knowledge for redundancy in troubleshooting and technical support.
  • Complete cross-training on Power BI, SSRS, and SQL fundamentals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; preferred fields include data analytics, statistics, information systems, computer science, or related.
  • Two or more years of experience in data analysis and institutional reporting.
  • Advanced SQL for complex query writing, optimization, and data modeling across Oracle and SQL Server/T-SQL.
  • Proficiency with Power BI and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) for building enterprise dashboards and paginated reports.
  • Strong understanding of relational database concepts and reporting data models.
  • Ability to design and maintain reporting datasets, implement data quality checks, and document lineage definitions.
  • FERPA-compliant handling of confidential data, including role-based access and report/data-level security practices.
  • High attention to detail and data accuracy, with a commitment to documentation standards.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including translating technical findings for non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organization and time management, including managing multiple stakeholder deadlines.
  • Collaborative, customer-service oriented approach, with ability to work independently and in teams.

Preferred Skills

  • Python for data wrangling and automation.
  • SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or other ETL tools.
  • Experience with accreditation/compliance reporting (e.g., IPEDS, Perkins, HLC) and campus survey analytics.
