Job Description

Emory University is hiring an in-person Research Data & AI Systems Officer to manage large-scale ophthalmic imaging, clinical, and AI datasets across the Eagle-Eye Suite and OEIL.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain a data dictionary and metadata.
  • Support efforts to develop and maintain data standards.
  • Help ensure that reports and queries use data accurately.
  • Contribute to business and system re-engineering and architecture development to define future data needs.
  • Act as an organizational database consultant, providing expertise to help users meet their data needs.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Ensure data from all OCT and ophthalmic imaging devices is securely transferred, fully backed up, and reliably stored on laboratory network-attached storage.
  • Develop and maintain a centralized, structured, searchable master database for research imaging devices and datasets, including:
    • Standardized metadata
    • Naming conventions
    • Documentation
    • Integrated 3D visualization tools, including technologies developed for Reflectivity
  • Connect all OCT and ophthalmic imaging devices to CONTINUUM, the clinical PACS used by the Emory Eye Center, with regular coordination involving Integrated Ophthalmic Systems, Inc., OCT manufacturers, and relevant Emory IT teams.
  • Maintain, organize, version, and document Eagle-Eye Suite/OEIL AI models, including algorithms for:
    • Image segmentation
    • Diagnosis
    • Prognosis
    • Treatment optimization
  • Keep AI documentation current, including training and validation datasets, model performance, software dependencies, version history, and deployment status.
  • Support validation, integration, deployment, monitoring, and updates of AI algorithms within CONTINUUM and EPIC.
  • Deploy and maintain secure local large language models as needed for data organization and search, technical documentation, AI-model management, clinical reporting, clinician feedback, and related activities.
  • Support clinical evaluation and acceptance of AI algorithms by Emory eye-care clinicians by developing and maintaining a structured survey and feedback system to assess:
    • Accuracy
    • Usefulness
    • Interpretability
    • Clinical relevance
  • Support patient experience by enabling near-real-time generation and delivery of validated AI-assisted imaging reports during visits to the Eagle-Eye Suite, aiming for results within seconds.
  • Ensure data-management, system-integration, AI-deployment, local-LLM, and clinical-evaluation work complies with IRB protocols, HIPAA, data-use agreements, and Emory policies, with ongoing coordination with relevant Emory departments, IT teams, and regulatory entities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of experience in data analysis, statistics, or a related field
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, data science, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, software engineering, information systems, or a related field
  • Experience managing large datasets, servers, network storage, automated backups, and secure data-transfer workflows
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience using Linux, relational databases, APIs, and version-control systems such as Git
  • Familiarity with machine-learning workflows, including dataset and model versioning, validation, deployment, and monitoring
  • Experience with containerization tools, AI experiment tracking, and dataset/model versioning (desirable)
  • Familiarity with local large language models, medical imaging, OCT/OCTA, DICOM, PACS, EPIC, or 3D visualization (asset)
  • Knowledge of data security, HIPAA, Institutional Review Board requirements, and the management of protected health information
  • Excellent organizational and technical problem-solving skills with strong documentation and ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to coordinate with clinicians, researchers, AI scientists, IT teams, regulatory offices, device manufacturers, and commercial partners

Additional Information

  • Work is required in-person at an Emory University location; remote work is not an option.
  • Emory may change the in-person status with notice to the employee.
