Data Engineer 5

Capital One is seeking Data Engineers for Risk Tech to help build and deploy proprietary risk management solutions supported by advanced AI technology. In this onsite role in McLean, VA, you will design cloud-first data capabilities, lead large-scale initiatives, and work closely with Agile teams to deliver technical solutions end to end.

What you’ll do

• Work with Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions using full-stack development tools and technologies.
• Provide technical leadership across teams that include developers, data analysts, and data scientists with experience spanning machine learning, distributed microservices, lakehouse architecture, and full-stack systems.
• Use programming languages such as Python and Spark, along with open-source relational and NoSQL databases, and cloud data warehousing platforms including Databricks and Snowflake.
• Stay current on data technology trends through experimentation, learning, participation in technology communities, and mentoring others in the data engineering space.
• Partner with product managers and software engineers to deliver robust cloud-first data solutions that support experiences for millions of Americans focused on financial empowerment.
• Independently design, build, and deliver cloud data solutions and applications with limited support from supervisors or managers.
• Architect and enforce common data engineering design patterns to improve code quality, maintainability, and reusability across platforms and pipelines.
• Design and build data pipelines and platforms with an emphasis on scalability, resilience, and operational efficiency, maintaining performance as data volume and business demands grow.
• Act as a force-multiplier by combining hands-on technical work, innovation, and mentoring to elevate peers and junior engineers.
• Lead and execute large-scale, transformative data initiatives from start to finish, including evaluating platform choices such as Snowflake versus Databricks based on technical and business requirements.
• Communicate technical concepts and data outcomes clearly to internal and external stakeholders to drive alignment and shared understanding.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Engineering).
• 6+ years of experience in application development (internship experience does not apply).
• 4+ years of experience in distributed data.
• 4+ years of experience with SQL.
• 4+ years of programming with at least one of: Python, Java, or Scala.
• 4+ years of experience designing and developing data pipelines.
• 2+ years of experience in data modeling and designing end-to-end data solutions using both relational and non-relational database systems.

Compensation

• McLean, VA: $229,900 - $262,400 per year for Data Engineer 5
• Richmond, VA: $209,000 - $238,500 per year for Data Engineer 5
• Eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI)
