Job Description

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking a Data Scientist to support its Personal Lines team with advanced statistical modeling and machine learning. This remote role combines hands-on analytics with clear stakeholder communication, data governance, and regulatory-minded delivery. You will help turn complex data into predictive insights, measurable business impact, and practical solutions that teams can act on.

What you’ll do

  • Work on advanced analytics and predictive modeling efforts using statistical methods and machine learning/deep learning techniques to solve business problems.
  • Partner with product management and the Line of Business (LOBs) to understand needs and shape potential solutions.
  • Collect and analyze data from multiple sources, including web APIs and internal datasets accessed via SQL.
  • Use appropriate database patterns and solution design to optimize joint development efforts.
  • Implement new statistical or mathematical methodologies as required for specific models or analyses.
  • Create meaningful visualizations and reporting that clearly connect findings to business impact.
  • Document the development and design of the solutions you build.
  • Communicate results and ideas to key decision-makers in a way that supports confident choices.
  • Keep pace with the latest technology trends and apply them where they improve outcomes.
  • Start with relatively simpler projects with minimal supervision as you build momentum.

What you bring

  • 2+ years of related experience; a bachelor’s degree is required and a Master’s or Ph.D. is preferred.
  • A strong understanding of relevant insurance analytics and metrics, with the ability to incorporate that context into work products.
  • At entry level, none or very limited insurance business knowledge is expected. A training plan is recommended, with a focus on building the insurance knowledge needed over time.
  • Ability to communicate through storytelling and collaborate with business partners.
  • Demonstrate the company’s CARE values in daily work.
  • Comfort with core concepts in math, stats, and modeling; experience building simple models through school projects or prior work is expected.
  • Ability to explain past technical projects clearly.

Compensation & location

Salary: USD 85,000 - 105,000 per year. Pay/compensation is a target hiring range and may vary by geographic location and other factors. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive, or spot recognition awards.
