Data Scientist II - Gen AI/Python/AWS/SQL
Job Description
Unum Group is hiring a Data Scientist II to support its innovation hub in developing proof-of-concept applications and delivering production-ready machine learning and generative AI solutions. The role focuses on analytical solution design, dataset engineering, automation of ML workflows, and collaboration with stakeholders to translate business problems into actionable insights.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and execute analytical solutions using optimization, simulation, machine learning, generative AI, and statistical modeling.
- Build predictive models to explain events, forecast behaviors, identify risk, and support segmentation and clustering.
- Apply domain expertise to ensure models are practical, interpretable, and aligned with business needs.
- Evaluate multiple approaches and select appropriate modeling techniques for each use case.
- Integrate and transform large volumes of data from diverse sources, including DB2, SQL Server, Teradata, and APIs, to support analytics and experimentation.
- Create modeling-ready datasets using validation, reconciliation, feature engineering, and aggregation.
- Write complex SQL queries with multi-table joins for data exploration and troubleshooting with minimal guidance.
- Develop logical data models that combine internal and external datasets, and lead discussions with external data providers when required.
- Build automated analytics pipelines using scripting, APIs, DevOps practices, and cloud platforms.
- Partner with engineering and IT teams to scale solutions, automate workflows, and integrate models into business processes.
- Participate in operationalizing AI/ML solutions in production environments.
- Create clear visualizations (static or dynamic) tailored to different audiences.
- Interpret results and communicate insights that influence senior leaders and key business partners.
- Convert complex technical work into recommendations that business stakeholders can use.
- Coach, mentor, and develop associate or junior data scientists through technical guidance and feedback.
- Collaborate with product owners, engineers, data architects, and business partners in an innovation-focused environment.
- Manage multiple projects at once, prioritizing independently and guiding less experienced team members.
- Stay current on emerging statistical methods, machine learning advancements, and generative AI tools.
- Conduct independent R&D to prototype new approaches and explore solutions for high-visibility business problems.
- Maintain an entrepreneurial, self-starter mindset with strong curiosity and continuous learning.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field required; master’s preferred.
- 4+ years of professional experience or equivalent relevant work.
- Python required, including experience with automation, DevOps practices, APIs, file I/O, and database integrations.
- Experience building solutions in cloud environments (AWS preferred; Azure or Google comparable).
- Exposure to object-oriented development and scalable architecture.
- Expertise with multiple visualization tools and techniques, with the ability to tailor visuals to business use cases and audiences.
- Deep knowledge of statistical inference, regression, feature selection, feature extraction, and machine learning algorithms.
- Familiarity with generative AI approaches is a plus.
- Strong SQL skills, including the ability to design, debug, and optimize complex queries.
- Ability to independently navigate and explore large databases.
- Experience combining internal and external data sources.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to influence senior leaders.
- Project management experience and strong business acumen (financial services experience a plus).
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent initiatives in a fast-moving environment.
- Comfort facilitating engagements and representing analytics with executive leadership.
