Data Scientist II - Pediatric Neurology

The University of Florida is seeking a Data Scientist II for the Developmental Network Neurobiology Laboratory in Gainesville, FL (onsite). This role supports AI-focused research by managing lab data infrastructure, building and maintaining analytical code, and partnering with researchers to translate study needs into technical solutions.

Role Overview

The Data Scientist II will oversee and maintain the laboratory’s data infrastructure and develop or optimize code used for AI-driven research projects. The position also includes supporting researchers through data analysis, documenting workflows and results, and communicating insights and limitations to the Principal Investigator.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and maintain the lab’s data infrastructure while developing and optimizing code for AI-focused research projects.
• Design, organize, and manage data infrastructure components including databases, ensuring data integrity, security, and accessibility for research needs.
• Apply best practices for data management, backups, and version control, and support scalable solutions for increasing dataset size.
• Write, test, and maintain efficient and well-documented code supporting machine learning and AI-driven research.
• Collaborate with researchers to convert scientific requirements into technical implementations.
• Optimize algorithms and workflows to improve performance, scalability, and reproducibility.
• Process and analyze large and complex datasets using appropriate statistical, computational, and visualization techniques.
• Interpret results in relation to research goals and communicate findings, insights, and limitations to the Principal Investigator and team.
• Support postdoctoral researchers and other lab personnel with troubleshooting related to code, software tools, and data issues.
• Provide guidance on programming, data handling, and computational workflows.
• Maintain thorough documentation for data processes, codebases, analytical methods, and research outputs.
• Support reproducibility and knowledge sharing across the laboratory.
• Contribute to additional lab activities as requested, including collaborative research tasks, system improvements, and ad hoc technical or analytical support.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or a similar field, plus 3 years of experience.
• Master’s Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or a similar field, plus 1 year of experience.
• Doctoral Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or a similar field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in data science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or a similar field with 1 year of experience or equivalent advanced training, or a Doctoral Degree in a related field.
• Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis and programming, including experience using multiple analytic tools (e.g., SAS, R, Python, SPSS) and creating reusable, well-documented code.
• Strong data science and management capabilities, including preparing analysis-ready datasets, implementing quality checks, and working with relational databases and SQL.
• Proven ability to work independently with initiative, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work with minimal supervision.

Location and Compensation

• Location: Gainesville, FL (onsite)
• Salary: USD 78,000 - 83,000 per year
