Developer - Analytics Engineer

The Analytics Engineer role serves as a trusted analytics partner to Department of Pharmacy leadership at Duke Health, translating healthcare data into reporting, analytics, and decision support solutions. This position designs and maintains governed analytics assets to support medication use, pharmacy operations, quality, patient safety, regulatory reporting, and performance improvement.

Core Responsibilities

• Partner with Pharmacy leadership and subject matter experts to understand business needs, prioritize initiatives, and deliver data-driven solutions aligned to strategic and operational objectives.
• Provide proactive stakeholder communication on project progress, risks, dependencies, and opportunities.
• Design, develop, validate, document, and maintain reporting, semantic modeling, and analytics solutions that support accurate, timely, and actionable information.
• Develop and maintain SQL queries, data transformations, and governed analytics assets supporting pharmacy operations, quality initiatives, and regulatory reporting.
• Translate complex analytical findings into clear insights for audiences that include frontline operational teams and senior executive leadership.
• Support quality improvement, patient safety, medication stewardship, and operational excellence through analytical consultation, project participation, and data-driven recommendations.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to improve data collection, reporting efficiency, data quality, and operational performance.
• Participate in analytics engineering best practices, including documentation, source control, peer review, testing, and deployment processes.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or four years of equivalent technical experience required.
• Level 1: No experience required beyond the minimum education (or equivalency) requirement.
• Level 2: Two years of directly related experience is required.
• Level 3: Four years of directly related experience is required.
• Follow all policies and procedures set forth by DUHS/DHTS/ACE as they pertain to the role.

Skills and Knowledge

• Basic understanding of core data platforms (Clarity, Caboodle) and underlying data structures for the role domain.
• Basic understanding of analytics and BI technologies and terminology related to the position.
• Ability to transform data into meaningful deliverables using analytics and BI tools.
• Ability to translate business and technical requirements into assigned deliverables such as data extracts or reports.
• Basic knowledge of SQL query debugging.
• Ability to respond to customer assistance requests as assigned and prioritized by the manager.
• Maintain timely, clear, concise, and accurate communication with the manager or business analyst regarding request status.
• Maintain analytics engineering documentation and metadata (for example, GitLab artifacts or data dictionaries) as assigned.
• Works with new hires/Level 1 team members to train on tool and technology usage to complete job duties.

Analytics Engineering Platform and Domain Expertise (Level 2/3)

• Advanced domain knowledge, including related data, workflows, tools, and semantic models.
• Ability to perform business analysis independently more than 75% of the time and translate business requirements into technical, data, and semantic model requirements more than 75% of the time.
• Ability to write/modify accurate SQL queries independently more than 90% of the time.
• SQL performance tuning knowledge, including writing complex SQL inclusion/exclusion criteria for cohort development.
• Participation in peer review of SQL, data transformations, and semantic model design, plus active involvement in data quality assurance.
• Ability to develop and present topics as assigned by customers and/or the ACE team, and active participation in Duke Analytics Community or other applicable networking forums.

Work Location and Hybrid Schedule

This position is based in Durham, NC with a hybrid work arrangement. Routine onsite presence is not required, and candidates should expect periodic onsite attendance to support collaboration, requirements gathering, project work, and stakeholder engagement with Department of Pharmacy leadership and staff. The frequency of onsite participation varies based on business needs, project activities, and customer engagement requirements.

Certifications

• No licensure/certification required.
• Preferred certification in analytics engineering technologies, as appropriate for the position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a healthcare environment, with understanding of clinical operations, pharmacy workflows, quality improvement, patient safety, and healthcare regulatory reporting.
• Epic certification or demonstrated proficiency with Epic Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito, or other Epic clinical and operational data models.
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, including semantic models, Power BI, Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, Dataflows, Pipelines, or related analytics capabilities.
• Experience developing Power BI and Tableau dashboards, scorecards, reports, and self-service analytics solutions.
• Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO), Git, GitLab, source control, and CI/CD deployment practices.
• Strong SQL development, dimensional modeling, semantic modeling, and analytical problem-solving skills.
• Experience developing ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, or other modern data engineering solutions.
