Machine Learning Engineer, Monetization AI/ML

Build monetization systems that scale with AI: OpenAI’s Monetization Group is a new cross-functional team that moves quickly from prototyping and experimentation to iterative deployment. In this role, you’ll help turn advanced machine learning research into production models that support user-first, privacy-preserving monetization products.

Work on state-of-the-art machine learning models and help deliver AI-powered solutions in collaboration with researchers, software engineers, and product managers. This position is based in San Francisco, CA (onsite).

Responsibilities

• Innovate and deploy advanced machine learning models that address real-world problems.
• Collaborate across functions with researchers, software engineers, and product managers to understand complex business challenges and deliver AI-powered outcomes.
• Optimize and scale production-ready data pipelines while improving scalability and accuracy.
• Learn and maintain quality by staying current with developments in machine learning and AI, participating in code reviews, sharing knowledge, and leading by example to uphold strong engineering practices.
• Monitor and maintain deployed models so they continue delivering value over time.

Requirements

• Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience with deep learning and transformers models.
• Proficiency with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and software engineering principles.
• Experience with search relevance, ads ranking, or LLMs is a plus.
• Familiarity with training and fine-tuning approaches for large language models, such as distillation, supervised fine-tuning, and policy optimization.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive approach to challenges.
• Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to move fast in an environment where requirements may be loosely defined and priorities or deadlines may compete.
• Willingness to own problems end-to-end and pick up missing knowledge to get the work done.

OpenAI Monetization Team

The Monetization team is building foundational systems to help OpenAI scale access to intelligence responsibly. The mission is to develop user-first, privacy-preserving monetization products, including next-generation ads experiences that strengthen user trust, unlock economic opportunity, and support OpenAI’s long-term innovation.

The team operates in a greenfield environment and works closely with Product, Design, and Research to bring research breakthroughs into real-world systems at global scale.
