Job Description

UCLA’s Voting Rights Project is hiring a Research Data Analyst to support research on voting rights, elections, and democracy. In this hybrid role in Los Angeles, you will help turn demographic, electoral, and geographic data into analysis and visualizations that feed policy research and project deliverables.

What you’ll do

  • Assist with research activities using demographic, electoral, and geographic data to support policy research, public reports, and other project outputs.
  • Support end-to-end data work, including acquisition, organization, cleaning, coding, analysis, and visualization, using census, voter file, precinct election, and GIS data.
  • Assist with research design.
  • Prepare research summaries and reports.
  • Participate in project meetings.
  • Collaborate with the research team to support ongoing initiatives and organizational partners.

Core skills and qualifications

  • Required: Strong skills in R, GIS, and data visualization.
  • Required: Experience downloading and cleaning data from Census, Election Administration, and other publicly accessible datasets.
  • Required: Attention to detail, with the ability to organize and document workflow.
  • Required: Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Required: Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate and present technical results.
  • Required: Ability to work discreetly with sensitive and confidential data.
  • Required: A Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, political science statistics, data science, or a related field.

Helpful background

  • Preferred: Substantive knowledge or experience in voting rights.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of quantitative research methods, including machine learning and statistics. Causal inference methods are a plus.

Schedule and pay

  • Schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Hourly pay: USD 33 - 65 per hour

  • Background check: Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Age requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older.
  • COVID and Flu: Evidence of inoculation is required for the position.
