Senior Lead AI Engineer
Job Description
Capital One is building enterprise AI systems for a highly regulated world. In this role, you will help modernize how teams develop, orchestrate, and govern AI and ML workflows, connecting agentic infrastructure, managed AutoML, and an enhanced UI to support well-governed, self-serve model development.
Based in New York, NY (onsite), this position offers USD 250,800 - 286,200 per year and the opportunity to evolve AI capabilities that span workflow orchestration, LLM-enabled experiences, and automated governance/control frameworks.
What you’ll do
- Modernize Workflows: Advance the orchestration layer and UI by applying generative AI capabilities and self-serve tooling, enabling governed low-code/no-code AI development for business domain experts.
- Build Agentic-Driven Infrastructure: Modernize platform services with agentic infrastructure designed to be reliable, scalable, secure, and aligned with enterprise guardrails.
- Drive AutoML Innovation: Scale enterprise-grade managed AutoML for tabular and time-series data to reduce solution time-to-market from weeks to days.
- Engineer AI-Driven Controls: Evolve a core component marketplace by engineering automated governance frameworks.
What you’ll bring
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field plus at least 6 years developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or a master’s degree plus at least 4 years.
- 6+ years programming with Python, Go, Scala, or Java.
How you’ll work with the stack
You will engage with generative AI, AutoML, tabular and time-series data, and core AI capabilities such as LLM Inference, Similarity Search and VectorDBs, Guardrails, and Memory. Technologies may include Python, Go, Scala, Java along with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, as well as C++, C#, Golang.

Preferred qualifications
- 7 years of experience deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or equivalent private cloud).
- Experience designing, developing, integrating, delivering, and supporting complex AI systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor an engineering team and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience developing AI/ML algorithms or technologies (e.g., LLM Inference, Similarity Search and VectorDBs, Guardrails, Memory) using Python, C++, C#, Java, or Golang.
- Experience applying state-of-the-art techniques to optimize training and inference software for improved hardware utilization, latency, throughput, and cost.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, including articulating complex AI concepts to peers.
- Interest in staying current with AI research and using novel techniques judiciously in production.
