Job Description
The Senior Principal Data Analytics Engineer role at BAE Systems combines software engineering, data analytics, and business intelligence to transform raw data into actionable insights and production-grade analytics layers. This onsite position is based in Nashua, NH, and leads the transition toward a modern, self-hosted analytics infrastructure with secure, governed data for high-stakes decision-making.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and maintain complex data models within a Medallion Architecture, focusing on Silver and Gold layers to deliver optimized datasets for end users.
- Lead the implementation of the core dbt on self-hosted environments such as Postgres, emphasizing modularity, version control, and CI/CD best practices.
- Establish and enforce strict data lineage and cataloging standards to ensure auditability and traceability of key performance indicators.
- Partner with leadership to define a comprehensive data strategy that balances technical debt with rapid analytic value; architect and deploy data tooling in secure, air-gapped or hybrid-cloud environments to ensure stability without constant external connectivity.
- Tune complex SQL queries and optimize data structures to manage large-scale datasets while sustaining cost-efficiency and performance; optimize ingestion and transformation of high-velocity telemetry or sensor data to bridge engineering data with executive BI needs.
- Collaborate with Data Scientists and Business Analysts to understand requirements and provide clean room data environments that support their work.
- Act as the technical authority for the analytics engineering team, setting standards for Python-based automation and SQL documentation.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience, or a related technical field.
- 6+ years of professional experience in data or analytics engineering, with a proven record of delivering end-to-end analytics solutions.
- Core Technical Stack:
- Expert SQL with proficiency in window functions, common table expressions, and complex joins.
- Modern Data Stack experience with dbt or a comparable transformation tool, including macros, packages, and custom testing.
- Experience implementing GitOps workflows (GitLab CI or Jenkins) or similar for data pipeline deployment.
- Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow, Prefect, or Dagster.
- Proven experience implementing Data Quality frameworks and automated testing (dbt tests, Great Expectations, or similar).
- Experience managing data in relational databases such as Postgres, Snowflake, MySQL, or equivalent.

PAY INFORMATION
Full-Time Salary Range: $132,962 – $226,035 per year. Salaries are determined by market structures, internal equity, and factors such as skills, education, and experience, as well as location and business considerations.
