Sr. Staff AI Engineer

Capital One is seeking a Sr. Staff AI Engineer in Richmond, VA (onsite) to help design and deliver responsible, scalable AI systems that support banking experiences. The position emphasizes foundational AI platforms, model training and inference, evaluation and governance, and multi-year platform initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with a cross-functional group of engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered capabilities that affect how associates work and how customers engage with Capital One.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
• Apply a broad stack of Open Source and SaaS AI technologies, including AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, and PyTorch.
• Develop and introduce foundation model optimization techniques to improve large scale production performance across scalability, cost, latency, and throughput.
• Shape the technical vision and contribute to the long term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.
• Define and guide the technical AI architecture vision, integrating applied research breakthroughs into production ecosystems with reliability and scale.
• Establish AI performance, safety, and transparency standards that guide model development and deployment across the company.
• Lead multi-year platform initiatives that unify data, compute, and model lifecycle management under a cohesive enterprise AI architecture.
• Mentor senior technical leaders across research, data, and engineering disciplines to support the next generation of Capital One AI technical leadership.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or a Master’s degree in related fields plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
• At least 10 years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: USD 286,200 - 326,700 per year.
