Staff, Data Engineer

Build scalable data capabilities that power analytics and operations at Walmart. This onsite Staff Data Engineer role in Sunnyvale, CA focuses on designing and delivering data pipelines, architectures, and advanced data modeling using cloud and big data technologies. You will help ensure data quality and governance compliance while enabling efficient, reliable data workflows for business teams.

Salary: USD 110,000 - 286,000 per year. Minimum experience: 3 years. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or Master’s degree in Computer Science).

What you’ll do

• Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable data pipelines and architectures for business analytics and operational needs.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical data solutions.
• Implement data integration, transformation, and quality frameworks using modern ETL and streaming technologies.
• Apply data governance compliance by following regulatory and ethical standards in data handling and storage.
• Use cloud platforms and big data tools to automate workflows and improve processing efficiency.
• Monitor and troubleshoot data systems to maintain reliability and performance.
• Provide technical guidance on data modeling, storage, and metadata management best practices.

Core qualifications

• Proven expertise in data engineering, including designing and maintaining scalable data pipelines.
• Proficiency in Python, with experience in ETL and big data technologies including Apache Spark, Hive, and Kafka.
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms, particularly Google Cloud, and modern data warehousing solutions.
• Experience implementing data quality frameworks and ensuring compliance with data governance and regulatory requirements.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and automated deployment in data environments.
• Solid understanding of data modeling techniques and metadata management across data platforms.

Minimum qualifications (choose one option):

• Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and 4 years of experience in software engineering or related field.
• Option 2: 6 years of experience in software engineering or related field.
• Option 3: Master’s degree in Computer Science and 2 years of experience in software engineering or related field.
• Plus: 3 years of experience in data engineering, database engineering, business intelligence, or business analytics.

Preferred background

• Experience with ETL tools and working with large data sets in the cloud.
• Knowledge of accessibility best practices, including implementation of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies.
• Experience creating inclusive digital experiences, aligned to Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines.
