As an AI Engineer (Agentic AI) onsite in Vienna, VA, you will help deliver agentic and conversational capabilities that improve member experiences through practical, governed AI adoption. The work sits within the AI Center for Enablement (C4E), supporting platform, engineering, and operations so teams can use AI capabilities with confidence.

What you’ll be doing

  • Contribute to C4E by supporting adoption and utilization of AI capabilities, fostering technological innovation and improving member experience.
  • Implement AI engineering solutions following established governance, validation, safety, and transparency guidelines.
  • Build and evaluate LLM-powered capabilities to improve accuracy, reduce hallucinations, and support compliance.
  • Develop AI capabilities such as RAG and supporting techniques to ground outputs in factual data.
  • Build and manage data pipelines for structured and unstructured data ingestion.
  • Ensure compliance with AI governance, security, and ethical standards throughout delivery.
  • Optimize application performance and scalability using cloud-native solutions.
  • Work in Agile development cycles with CI/CD processes to enable rapid deployment.
  • Support AI standards and assist with model documentation and registration in the Model Catalog per security and regulatory guidelines.
  • Contribute documentation and implementation of approved AI/ML roadmaps and technical plans.
  • Support developer productivity initiatives by leveraging AI-assisted coding tools and contributing to AI-driven solutions.
  • Deliver core engineering skills across LLMs, prompt engineering, and applications delivery.
  • Collaborate with senior team members to advance NFCU’s C4E capabilities.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in AI Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Data Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent education, training, and experience).
  • 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience building AI solutions, including AI agents and chatbots using platforms such as Azure AI Foundry, LangChain, or similar.
  • Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to ground models in factual data and reduce hallucinations.
  • Experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs to connect AI models to applications.
  • Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and fine-tuning.
  • Background in NLP including tokenization, embeddings, and conversational AI techniques.
  • Experience with front-end and back-end development using frameworks such as React, Angular, Node.js, Django, or Flask.
  • Experience building data pipelines and preprocessing for structured and unstructured datasets (for example, Databricks).
  • Experience using Vector Databases & Graph Databases for semantic search and recommendation systems.
  • Experience enabling Model Governance including transparency, bias detection, and compliance measures.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD, Git, and Agile methodologies.
  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot in development workflows.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and presentation skills for business and technical stakeholders.
  • Software engineering fundamentals including data structures, debugging, unit testing, and writing maintainable, well-documented code.
  • Familiarity with dependency management, logging, error handling, and differences between development, test, and production environments.
  • Experience evaluating AI and GenAI outputs, including secure handling practices for sensitive information.
  • Experience delivering solutions using Python, SQL, and NoSQL capabilities.
