AI Engineer - Application Development

Applied Underwriters is building AI-powered tools that help underwriters and operations teams get work done. You will join a small group of AI Engineers with a strong application development focus, supported by hands-on mentorship and collaboration across data and infrastructure. This onsite role is based in New York, NY.

Why this role

You will design and ship AI-powered apps and workflows that people use every day. The team works close to the business, adapting existing products to real underwriter and operations needs, and building new products when nothing currently fits. You will also have exposure to data and infrastructure, with three senior AI engineers reviewing your work and teaching you along the way.

What you’ll do

• Work directly with underwriters and operations staff to understand how AI can improve daily workflows
• Adapt products the team already runs to match evolving needs
• Build new products when no existing solution fits
• Design and ship AI-powered apps and workflows people rely on
• Contribute to data and infrastructure work alongside the rest of the team

What you bring

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
• 0–4 years of experience, including internships and co-ops
• Strong Python skills and working SQL
• Hands-on experience with full-stack development
• Work you built yourself that you can show us, such as:
  • A full-stack AI application
  • A document-processing or structured-extraction tool
  • An agentic workflow or tool integration
  • A human review or approval process built into an app
• Curiosity about how the business runs, along with patience to learn insurance from the people who know it
• Clear communication with non-technical colleagues

Compensation and onsite details

Salary range: USD 100,000 - 120,000 per year. Location: New York, NY (onsite).
