Job Description

The AI Engineer role on PowerPlan’s Applied AI team blends engineering with close departmental collaboration, taking AI initiatives from early problem definition through to the tools teams use weekly. This hybrid position focuses on measurable outcomes, quality expectations, and enabling departments to run and evolve solutions over time.

Role Overview

As an AI Engineer, you will embed with departments to build AI solutions end to end, starting from the first problem statement and extending through the weekly tooling used by the business. You will own your work, partner with stakeholders to ensure solutions meet quality and robustness standards, and help departments transition to running and changing what has been built without ongoing support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Within the first 30 days, embed with your first department, learn the current workflow from the people who do the work, and agree on a one-page problem statement, a measured baseline, and real examples prior to building.
  • Help write a team playbook for building with AI tools, including standards for keeping shared work current and testing for quality and robustness based on learnings from real builds.
  • By the end of the first quarter, deliver a first solution into weekly pilot use, with evaluation against real examples and time saved measured against the agreed baseline.
  • By month six, expand from one pilot to one or two solutions in weekly use, and by year end, drive three solutions across at least two departments, including two larger cross-department builds with the team’s AI data engineer.
  • Redesign workflows with the people who operate them, focusing on workflow clarity rather than only making steps faster, using agentic coding tools as the default building approach.
  • Ensure each department receives runbooks, training, and the internal capability to run and change the solutions you deliver.
  • Publish reusable agent skills and workflow patterns by month six, grow them into a company-wide library, and help define when AI output can be trusted versus when a person should perform a check.

Requirements

  • Two to four years of professional experience building or shipping software products (as an engineer, product manager, or similar), or a master’s degree in a related field with at least one year of that experience.
  • Experience shipping a software or product that others rely on, with the ability to explain what you built, why it was designed that way, and what changed after users adopted it.
  • Systems thinking and first-principles reasoning, including questioning why a step exists before automating it, and demonstrating a process you changed rather than only accelerated.
  • Ability to translate expert conversations into a clear problem statement and a measurable definition of success.
  • Agentic coding tools as a default approach (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or OpenCode), including planning the work, directing the tool, and checking what it produces (tools are provided, and Claude Code is used).
  • Ability to write working Python or JavaScript, or build working software with agentic coding tools; experience using SQL and APIs.
  • Clear communication of tradeoffs, and experience teaching others to change a tool themselves, formally or informally.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, industrial or systems engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Based in Atlanta and able to be in the office at least three days per week; authorized to work in the United States. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship, now or in the future.

  • You have used continuous improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, or value stream mapping.
  • You have automated workflows inside business systems, or built agent skills, MCP connections, or other reusable pieces for AI tools.
  • You hold a master’s degree in a related field such as computer science, information systems, data science, or business analytics.

Location and Work Arrangement

Role location is Atlanta, GA with a hybrid schedule. The role involves a combination of onsite work from the corporate office and work from home.
