Job Description

Cary Street Partners Financial is looking for an Application Developer, Automation & AI Engineer to help the Corporate Technology team build and improve internal web applications and AI-assisted automations. This onsite role in Richmond, VA blends hands-on development (including Node.js and Python, with Go) with practical support for AI-built applications across the firm.

In this position, you will design and maintain internal tools, troubleshoot issues for colleagues, and help move prototypes from external platforms onto the firm’s internal hosting environment. You will also deploy and support applications on a containerized platform using Kubernetes, Git-based deployments, and established templates in partnership with the infrastructure team.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build, and maintain internal web applications, APIs, and workflow automations.
  • Act as a first point of contact for employees with coding questions, including troubleshooting errors, reviewing code (including AI-generated code), and guiding team members through version control and development workflows.
  • Help colleagues transition prototypes built on outside platforms into the firm’s internal hosting environment.
  • Deploy and support applications on the firm’s containerized platform (Kubernetes with Git-based deployments) using established templates, with support from the infrastructure team.
  • Build integrations with internal and third-party systems using REST APIs.
  • Maintain existing internal applications and support modernization over time.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while ensuring code is secure, tested, and maintainable.
  • Write clear documentation and help establish development standards, templates, and best practices as the team grows.

What you bring

  • 2+ years of development experience in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js), from professional work, internships, or substantial academic/personal projects.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as MariaDB/MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative workflows including branching, pull requests, and code review.
  • Foundational IT knowledge: networking, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, TLS certificates, and the Linux command line.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants (examples include Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude) and the judgment to review and correct their output.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and patience for explaining technical issues to non-technical colleagues.

Technology focus

Work may involve Node.js, Python, Go, SQL databases, REST APIs, and modern tooling across containers and CI/CD. The role includes experience with Kubernetes, Docker and/or Podman, Helm, and GitOps tools (plus GitHub Actions). Web frameworks and libraries may include FastAPI, Express, Next.js, and React.

Compensation: $85,000 - $110,000 per year.

Location: Richmond, VA (onsite).
