Applied AI Engineer

Appian’s AI-first transformation is backed by a team building production-grade applied AI for internal use. In this onsite role in McLean, VA, you’ll design and deliver AI prompts, workflows, and evaluation practices that help teams move from prototypes to reliable, deployable solutions. You’ll also partner across IT and Information Security to ensure the tools meet data-handling and protocol requirements, while staying current with what’s next in the Gemini and Kiro ecosystems.

Compensation: USD 100,000 - 225,000 per year. Experience: 3+ years. Work arrangement: This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia, with an expectation to be in the office 5 days a week.

What you’ll do

• Design, build, and maintain production-quality prompts, Gemini Gems, NotebookLMs, and Appian AI workflows for internal, production-grade use.
• Turn manual work into AI-assisted steps, delivering solutions end-to-end from development through deployment with non-technical customers in mind.
• Create an evaluation framework to support reliability and compare model performance for business tasks.
• Own and manage an internal repository for employee self-service prompts, including versioning, organization, and ensuring shipped tools are documented and discoverable.
• Act as a resident expert on the Google Gemini ecosystem, Amazon Kiro, and emerging AI technology trends for the organization.
• Collaborate with IT and Information Security by red-teaming tools and ensuring prompts follow required data-handling and protocol practices.

What you bring

• 3-5+ years of hands-on experience with modern LLMs and shipping AI agents in real-world applications, or equivalent experience in a high-growth SaaS or technology environment.
• Subject-matter expertise in the Google Gemini ecosystem and Amazon Kiro, along with direct experience with prompting and building automation workflows.
• Comfort with scripting to connect data sources and automate workflow components, plus strong technical aptitude for integrating different systems into AI solutions.
• Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to less technical audiences.
